Ning 3.0 - Make Site Private - How to Set Page Privacy for Members Only

Ning 3.0 - Make Site Private

In order to make a Ning 3.0 site private, you need to change privacy at the page level. This feature is actually pretty cool, because it gives us a lot of control for content and module privacy. However, I have suggested and will again, that Ning add a one switch deal for private/public. For some reason, I'm thinking this may not be an easy request, and have doubts they will.

How to Set Page Privacy for Members Only:

  • You set the privacy when you create or edit a page, by setting "Who can view" the pages.
  • Open the Toolbar.
  • Click on the first icon: Social Site Manager, see below.
  • Click on Link: Site & Pages.
  • You need to set every module and page, see red arrows. For each page, Select Members from the dropdown, next to: "Who can view".
  • Save each time you set a page.

How many times have I seen this request on the forum??  LOL

I love that they have given us this much control.

Definitely. =)

Jen,

I delete my home page on 3.0 and want to know how to get it back on.

How To Create Custom Page and Make it Your Home Page in Ning 3.0

  • Toolbar/Social Site Manager/Site & Pages
  • Add a Page.
  • Under top right "New Page", select "Page type" from drop down: Custom
  • Check box: Set as Homepage
  • Select your Layout under: Layout & Content
  • Click on button: Add Content
  • Drag & Drop Modules from left window to your layout window.
  • Add HTML for text content.
  • Save.

l will try, thank you.

So does this mean that we can make every page private, including the home page? In other words, can this be done on every part of the network? When I hear "Page" I think of 2.0 pages...

From what I've tested, yes. You can set every single page and module. Pages in 3.0 are called "Custom Pages". And modules use the word page as well, for example: Blog Page, Photo Page, etc... The "Custom Pages" are utilized similar to Ning 2.0. But, not only are they used to add HTML content, we can add multiple HTML blocks, multiple modules, etc... I consider them as a layout canvas. But, to add a Page like 2.0, just add content/HTML. The window for HTML is too small, and the WYSIWYG is not really helpful because of the size. For now we don't have the Custom Code and metatag fields. Phil says this is all coming, and even better.

Hope that makes sense,

Jen

Perfect! I was hoping that's how it was. I know everything isn't operational yet, but need to get started. Thanks my dear :)
