New Ning Like Buttons Coming Soon! Beta Available Now.

Ning Network Creators:

How ya “like” me now? Like buttons now available in beta for all Ning Network Creators.

JenSocial has joined the Beta.

If you are a Ning Network Creator, and would like to join the Beta on your Ning Network, go to My Network and look under "Ning Announcements" to read about the new "Like Buttons". To join the Beta, look under Settings/Beta. Follow the instructions from there.

A few of the details, according to Ning:

Here's something you might like — we've just added Like Buttons to photos, videos, and blog posts. With the site Like Button, everything that you like gets added to your "My Likes" page. You can also Like something right from the Main Page. And with the Facebook Like button, now anyone with a Facebook account can like what they see and share it with their friends. Hope you enjoy this new feature! Get Liking!

Ning's Official Announcement: (Original Discussion)

Today, we’ve rolled out the beta for our Ning Like Button and the Facebook Like Buttons, two features that enhance the Ning Engagement System. “Liking” is a lightweight interaction that has proved to be incredibly powerful. Now, you can bring that power to your Ning Network with either a customized Like Button, a Facebook Like Button, or both. Try them out today by going to your Beta Page.

If you enable the Ning Like button, members can “Like” photos, videos, and blog posts right from the Main Page, in addition to detail pages...

Additionally, anything your members Like gets added to a brand-new My Likes page, which is a handy way to archive interesting stuff:

According to Ning:

The Ning Like button comes with a ton of customization options. You can choose the default icon, as well as the default name for the feature, on the Like Button Settings page. This is also where you can re-enable “Rating” and “Favorite” if you want to hang on to those features.

If you enable the Facebook Like button, it will behave just like other Facebook Like buttons you’ve seen elsewhere. Unlike the Ning Like button, you don’t have to be a member to like something on Facebook. So the Facebook Like button is a great option if you want the maximum number of people to Like network content and make it go viral.

One awesome addition is that we hooked Facebook up to your network’s engagement system too. This means that if your content gets a ton of Facebook “Likes,” it will still rise to the top of the Leaderboards and other popularity sortings.

Naturally, you can enable the Ning Like Button, the Facebook Like Button, both, or neither. It’s up to you!

Yes Jen... Don't even turn it on... Then your problem goes away...

Jerry, I just read this on Creators:

Verna,

Please try again with the FB like button. We fixed an issue that will allow you to comment on a FB like. If you comment, it will act the same as a share and post a thumbnail to your wall.

Thanks,

Patrick

Do you think this fixed the problem?

Thanks for all your help today! I've been a busy, dizzy, blonde today. LOL!

That is great... But I still wonder why they released that function as we had it before... Am I missing the point?  And you are welcome... and DITTO :)

I am so lost, you would laugh. I just don't know. Tomorrow, I'll go through all these likes, shares, and what-nots, as a regular member, and see if I "get" it all.

LOL,

Jen

Chloe, I think this is excellent feedback, and it would be great if you sent this to Ning via your Manage panel. I'm lost of some of it, and will need to look closer to understand. Chloe, love your name. We just had a new baby girl in the family, and that is her name. ;-)

Thanks. I went to post the info, but it looks like many others have ran into the same thing and are posting it.

This is great!
Awesome. Using it, loving it.

I just tested again.. and my conclusion is that after they made the changed to the the FaceBook LIKE...  I will still pass on it.  The old one works right, the new one is from 1980's :) Just my opinion.

The only thing that is neat about it is the comment box that pops after you press LIKE.. the problem is the shared link is still not CONTENT specfic like the old one is.. which makes it useless for a Private Network

Guess we could write this in the comment box.

"Hi FaceBook friend.  Please note that there is supposed to be a picture with this post but the only way you can view it is if you click the Link and sign up for my Network."

Na... :)

I use the Skysa bar on my network - its like the Wibya bar, but it actually works. lol  My social network is a beta test for Skysa.com and they have been working very hard to tweak for NING.com

My point is, the Skysa bar already provides the option to add Facebook "LIKEs" and "Share" contents from my network.  So, NING is behind the 8 ball on this one with adding the Facebook "LIKE".

NING needs to make it so there is ONE "LIKE" feature, the NING "LIKE" is the only one we should have.  However, the network creator should have the option to enable the like feature to both "LIKE" for NING and also serve as a LIKE over to the users FB page. It could also serve as a Like to Twitter. But the NING creator needs to be able to select that in a check box - 1 or both.

ONE LIKE BUTTON for both a NING LIKE, and a FB LIKE.\\\I do hope they add the LIKE to the users comments, etc.

You can check out the Skysa bar at Skysa.com   Highly recommend.  They have updated and added a lot of new cool features to their chat room feature.  Sharing Youtube videos to all users, and it also gives you instant messaging to all your ning users logged in.  It rules!

Tried the like button beta. After enabling both options the Facebook like, registered the count but did not report to Facebook. I would urge creators to change the name on their area wide button to favorites. Like is too confusing. Also. When the facebook like button was enabled, I could not longer use the standard Share button that I had up. Nope. Again I advise waiting and watching or at the very least testing it throughly on your network before advising your members about it. And I do have a beef about that, while we are at it. Ning automatically creates a blast when you enable the buttons. You don't have to use it, but it is going to be confusing to newbies, I will bet.

Thanks Jerry and Tom,

Great advice! Going to follow it, myself. ;-)
