Update From Ning's Vice President of Advocacy

Hi,
Many of you have posted questions about when we will phase out our free
service and how much time we will give you to make a decision. I want to
assure you that we will give you adequate time to evaluate the changes
and transition to the new paid service. As Jason explained at the start
of this discussion, we will share all of the details of our new offering
on May 4, including features and price points. We plan to roll-out this
new offering in early summer. Once the changes roll-out, we will give
you ample time to make a decision to move to the new paid service.

In other words, you will have a minimum of 10 weeks to transition.

Thanks,
John

the free sites can do four things as i see it, 1. pay for it, 2. get together and as many as possible leave and sign a petition stating how unfair we think it is and suggest they stop new free accounts, 3, same as 2 but add a boycott of businesses who use ning, 4. find a social network that is similar or better than ning and we all, as many as we can persuade, pick up our sticks and move there. in my opinion Multiply would fill the bill but i am sure there are others out there. remember this may just be the beginning of problems with the people who run ning. maybe this guy was out of work for the last 10 years. who knows. i'll go along with what you people want to do, except stay, i have a better deal at Multiply. good luck everyone, deck

Does anyone know of any tools available to assist in moving off Ning? Does, or will, Ning offer a tool to package up the content of a Ning community?

I agree with the first part of what you said Cherokee.

Jen thank you for staying on top of this.

Will you consider the fact that many of us are a Social network, non profit making and have put our ALL into the making of these Sites. We are not ALL rolling in money so Please at least consider this before you Demand an amount that for many would be far too high!

When Ning said anyone can create a social network for FREE, they meant for free. They did not say or mean free for a period of time or untill Ning changes its mind. FREE means FREE, with no strings attached. If they didn't want us to have FREE for all time, they should have stated that at the beginning.
But they didn't.
If the free sites can only stay if they pay, then they can compare prices being charged by other platforms and may get better deals. In that case, some may leave because of what they can get elsewhere for their money.
Once it is not FREE, Ning will have to cut prices to be competative.

So not loving having to move our network. I think what started free should stay free!

so the picture is becoming clearer that just paying $5 a month for a domain name isn't necessarily going to qualify you. There will b ean entirely new system, and you will have to jump on or not.
