Excuse my ignorance but where do you add the alt tag. Do you have to go into the HTML editor of a blog for example and alter the code in there, and if so how do you know where in all the gobldiegook do you add it ?

No problem, not ignorance. You can only add image alt tags for inserted images. The discussion link I provided will show you how.

Do I just add 

<img src="yourimage.jpg" alt="This is your ALT text.">

to my HTML box ? with alternative works in place of

"your image"

and

"This is your alt text"
