JenSocial Testing Ning's New Rich Text Editor in Forums!

beta testing ...

Finally, a better  rich text editor.

I am proud to announce: Ning has given us (all of you!) the privilege of helping with the beta testing on the future Ning Editor. It is only available in the forum discussions, like here!

  • You will find a lot of new options when composing new discussions.
  • You can try it out while replying to existing discussions (like this one).

Test in this Discussion, or any Forum Discussion on JenSocial.

Also, be sure to make your comments to Ning about the Editor here:

So far I love it. However, and a warning - - I find that my FireFox Spell checker is not working within the new Editor. I have a huge problem with this, and hope that changes for the full implementation. I've already reported this in the Ning Discussion.

Enjoy!

Jen

Anything would be better that the text editor we have Jen...

True.

;-)

How can we get it on our sites to beta test it Jen, how did you get it here??

I'm not sure if they are offering to more sites or not. I requested it.

Best,

Jen

My findings so far and have been reported on Ning Creators, here: http://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/were-trying-out-a-new-text

First, let me say, I hope everyone realizes I am not complaining. But, hoping I can provide constructive feedback to Team Ning. :-)

Can't Add Background Image to DIV:

I am finding that I cannot add a background image, like in a DIV wrapped around the content.

Line Height Spacing Not Enough:

When I make the font-size large, the line height is not enough (lines run very closely together). I tried to add the style attribute for line-height, and it didn't work.

Too Many Spans Within Text:

I added a line of text similar to Erics, with multiple colors. I understand that all WYSIWYG Editors will add a new style/span to each color selected. However, when I looked at the raw code, what a mess. There are so many extra spans and styles, it's hard to decipher the code.

Last but not least: Spell Checker - - I feel compelled to copy/paste the very text I am typing here, into a spell checker. This is truly inconvenient.

Best,

Jen

What good is this if you cannot send out to your yahoo emails.  They will not load up and I have been complaining about this for 2 months!

Sorry Sandra, Not sure what you mean exactly? We're beta testing in Forum discussions. Once Ning finishes with testing, the Editor will be available throughout your Ning site.

Best,

Jen

Hi Jen, Ok, while I appreciate that they love to come up with new ideas, and comparing to the new one, this is my point of view looking at features for both old and new.

For someone that has not used the old one, and it would be their first time to use the editor, this new one would be fine.

However, as a creator of ning networks, and since I have been using the other one, on a daily basis, all day long, these are the features I am used to having access to and at this point are not provided with the beta and I would greatly miss.

For me I use and create columns, adding a pictures and text next to each, this is good when I am highlighting members and want a clean look, or featuring products with text decritpions, or for creating lists in columns, like state directories, or member directories, then when created, I copy the html to take to my network, as it retains that format.

At this point with the current editor, I have the option to change font family, size and colors of text, I do see that Beta offers that you can use the clip board to paste WORD text documents into the beta editor, that is good.

I also notice that you cant change the background colors with the beta, if I choose.

My point of view, and what whould everyone else miss, because I think it is about the features that would be no longer available?

Thank you for letting me explain my view, have a great day, Karren

Hi Karren,

Thank you for your input. I'm a little confused though. This beta Editor offers a good deal more than the existing built-in Ning Editor, like on our comment walls. I don't know of anything that is missing.

Any chance you're referring to the WYSIWYG  Editor I offer here? Which btw, will not go away.

If not, what do you mean exactly when you say you create columns? Just trying to understand... :-)

Thanks again for your input,

Jen

I hope they get some of the bugs out of it. Tried it at Creators and it still needs some help. Guess that's why they call it testing! I'm glad you are testing it here. One problem I noticed. I posted a pic and the text wrapped the way I designated but the picture itself was a gif pic. After it posted it stopped the flash movements. My members post a lot of pics like that and for the special efx not to be there would be a bummer. :(

Still not working...

That's interesting. I hadn't tested an animated gif yet. Yeah, I do hope they fix this. Be sure to report on Creators.

Thanks for your input,

Jen

I did answer at Creators but Eric didn't answer so he may have not read it. Will have to again.
