UPDATE FROM NING CEO: JASON ROSENTHAL

Hi Everyone, (POSTED on Creators by Jason Rosenthal on April 16, 2010)

As many of you know, we made a decision yesterday to focus 100% of the company on enhancing the features and services we offer to paying Ning Creators. The tens of thousands of you who already use our paid service represent over 75% of our traffic, and we’ve heard repeatedly from you ways that we can deliver a killer service to help make your Ning Network more effective. Some examples of things we are working on that you’ve asked for include new APIs, a new mobile experience and new advertising and revenue opportunities.

As part of this change, we’ll be phasing out our free service. On May 4, 2010, we will share with you all of the details of our new offering, including features and price points, through a series of blog posts, emails, and conference calls. We recognize that there are many active Ning Networks for teachers, small non-profits, and individuals and it's our goal to have a set of product and pricing options that will make sense for all of them. For Ning Creators using our free service who choose to move to another service, we will off a migration path and time to make that change. We will still continue to allow free trials and test networks on the Ning Platform.

We look forward to talking to you further on May 4th.

Spruz.com says it all for me, scripts and a feel of ning of old, it however just as advanced. there is a
Spruz Owners' Community etc, all very similar. I really like the feel of the software.

Hi Jen,
Ning has always been great and we loved the idea of "freedom". Of course, that confidence now got a little crack. We do hope that there will be "acceptable" conditions after the 4th of May. Have you become the "Devadatta" of Ning?
Have a wonderful weekend :)
Kind regards,
Patrice

We've had over 800 submissions in the past 36 hours and we're working really hard to build out a Ning exporter and backup system - we started yesterday and will be working hard over the next week. To be clear, our service is only for backing up your Ning Network and preserving it on a new website, archivedsites.com where you and your members will be able to access it after Ning deletes it. As for other free services to keep your community running, we're including some suggestions at the bottom of this email.

This past evening, we added a few items to our website, including a set of forums so that we can answer questions faster and have people offer suggestions on services they're moving to.

We recommend the following free services:
Web Hosting: Weebly.com (we built our information website on weebly)
Forums: Tal.ki
Wikis: PBworks.com
Blogging: Posterous.com (posterous is offering free blog importing)

If you have any questions, check out our FAQ, post in our forums, or just reply to this email. We can't answer all questions over email, but we'll try our best.

Thanks,

Jen, l know l will miss you. l do not feel all stupid now, l had a real friend in you and you some times make a little mistake, l guess that is one reason people seem to get along well with you. You are all natural. Just like most of the people are on Ning. We became almost family on Ningand l feel like l losing my family members.

Hi Roland,
Haven't seen you in a while. Sorry it's under these circumstances. Otherwise, I hope you are doing well.
Best,
Jen

Some thoughts of mine:
I like reading thoughts here, unlike some sites where it's just getting crazy, sad, and out of control. For some wonderful reason, maybe because this is neutral ground - - regardless of what anyone feels, or how upset Network Creators may be, you are all being reasonable, and just talking this through.
Since I started this site, it means a lot to me. And, I want to thank you for that.
Best,
Jen

I've got to say I'm rather impressed as to how well Ning has treated veterans including myself. Active or not, we helped to make the platform what it is today. Now, we are just another piece of paperwork to throw away with the last fiscal year's waste. I'm loving every moment of this kindness.

I for one would not be paying money to a company that treats us like this.

Some of us requested easy payment 4 those who dont have credit cards.....why isn't this mentioned....And also include other currencies like Rands and Euro's

Well, I have looked at socialgo, now webs.com-can't seem to send out emails for my events! I just did an Outstanding Chicago Community Award Event, perhaps I should start up Worst Community Award!

I just created one over at spruz.com which is a lot like ning and it was very easy to do.
