UPDATE FROM NING CEO: JASON ROSENTHAL

Hi Everyone, (POSTED on Creators by Jason Rosenthal on April 16, 2010)

As many of you know, we made a decision yesterday to focus 100% of the company on enhancing the features and services we offer to paying Ning Creators. The tens of thousands of you who already use our paid service represent over 75% of our traffic, and we’ve heard repeatedly from you ways that we can deliver a killer service to help make your Ning Network more effective. Some examples of things we are working on that you’ve asked for include new APIs, a new mobile experience and new advertising and revenue opportunities.

As part of this change, we’ll be phasing out our free service. On May 4, 2010, we will share with you all of the details of our new offering, including features and price points, through a series of blog posts, emails, and conference calls. We recognize that there are many active Ning Networks for teachers, small non-profits, and individuals and it's our goal to have a set of product and pricing options that will make sense for all of them. For Ning Creators using our free service who choose to move to another service, we will off a migration path and time to make that change. We will still continue to allow free trials and test networks on the Ning Platform.

We look forward to talking to you further on May 4th.

yohab,
Not sure exactly what you've asked, sorry. But, we won't know premium rates until May 4, when Ning makes next announcement. And, I'm assuming they will announce the rates, then.
Best,
Jen

l guess that is why a freebie site should go on, because we can help remove that person that causes these things.

It is sad when people do these things and it can happen on any website. Even the next one we move too.

l guess what l am trying to say is, that saddly this happens, We all have to keep our eyes open on this.

These same business people have freebie sites on other networks. Does that not strike you funny.

Especially when one said the freebies talk about is butterflies and flowers. Made it sound like these things are unimportant.l would like to know what is going to help to save my world, not how much money l can make.

Fantasyland8.

I for one would leave ning and make a big noise about it webwide if your network were to be a victim of the cuts.

However, if you read my post earlier, you will be aware how Ning's cuts made child internet users vulnerable to abuse for a whole unnecessary week. The errant network has this hour been taken offline 9 days after I reported it. Maybe it only closed because I filed a report with the FBI/IINI anyway! That would be scandalous!

I intend to join 'Creators' and have it out with Jack Rosenthal this week. I am concerned for our children.

You would think that any network like 'Please Help Missing Children' would be able to stay because of the good it does for the world, They have help found some of these missing and kidnapped children to find their way back to their parents. This site puts it in the web and everyone can see it and then keep their eyes open, This site is really needed. The rich better think about this because one day their child may come us missing. And then they would need a site like this.

This is an extremely heartbreaking day for me.
Because I am poor, do not have cash enough for bare essentials much less paying for internet sites, I am forced to close Please Help Missing Children, Ning.
As a result, I will be losing over a thousand members who have utilized the slide show on their sites in order to help bring the missing children home, or who have devoted time to circulating the information and photos of these precious children... who have cared enough to contribute and assist.

I see these changes here in Ning to be reflective of what is wrong in the world. If you have money, and you can buy your way in, you are entitled to 'good things.' If, like me, you are disabled through an injury at work or other ways, and living below poverty level, you are not entitled to anything.

I will be spending today and the next few days dismantling a site in which I have devoted my time, heart, and soul to on behalf of the missing children. All of those children. These children and their families have lost a major platform because of greed.
It makes me physically ill.

Well, the first cuts have been made..... in the vital area of moderation. This was actually confirmed by a message I received last night from ning. So all of a sudden I don't feel safe here anymore. particularly on behalf of kids.

Here is a glimpse of the money-at-al-costs 'grave new world' under Rosenthal. Question: Is pornography not the internet's top money-spinner? Well, check this 'coincidence'!

I reported child image abuse on the familynaturist network NINE days ago. No response! Under Gina Bianchini, when you reported network child porn, it was sorted in 48 hours at worst. Without exception! Well, Ning now have a formal complaint filed at a famous bureau in Virginia to face!

MOVING TO THE TECHNICAL SIDE.

All this could be an own-goal (a safety to you in the US). Nobody is going to invest money in site building unless he is fairly certain not to lose the lot. If ning wants to even survive, it has to court creators with the free option. Only during this trial period can the creator (a) be assured his project will cover costs and (b) decide whether he is competent to manage and able to commit time to the network.

I must admit, I could never understand why a time cap, say 3 or 6 months, was never put on free sites in the first place.

Maybe, and this is not clear, the free sites will continue, but without the help or support they have had to date.

Rosenthal has had a month to work this out. I hope his policy is better thought out than appears at face value.

Hopefully at least he will think again about his negligent decision to save costs by compromising internet safety.
