For what it's worth, finally "heard" from someone involved with Ning, the former Ning CEO - - and (just found out today, Former of Mode Media/CEO, as well), Samir Arora. It wasn't much, but great to hear he is listening. Does this mean Ning will improve their communication dialogue with Ning Creators? Who knows? But, maybe, just maybe, they will start listening, or at least tell Ning Creators their plans for the future of this platform. Honestly, this is the first time in 2 years I have heard one word from this company, other than support calls, "...working on the issues, updates to come..." AND the announcement: Notice of 2016 Storage Limit and Pricing Plan Changes. I just wanted to share this with you all. If you want to follow on Twitter, click on one of the links, below.
@samirarora Great someone involved @Ning listening finally. LOVE #Ning but must have reliable platform/open dialogue https://t.co/QHfZbzdxSD

@Ning @samirarora You set up phone intros with several Ning Site Owners, when @ModeMedia first purchased #Ning. I thought you cared? Show it

@samirarora Thanks! We all feel lost. Had no idea you were no longer #Ning CEO. ZERO communication updates/overall. About to embrace @phpFox

This Blog post started out with sharing a very short Twitter response from the former CEO of Ning and Mode Media. It's turned into an active discussion on Ning alternatives. Join the conversation.

Yes, I was looking at the Cloud version. With a 14 day free trial (with access to all plug ins, even the paid ones, to test, you can't go wrong with at least giving it a shot.) I can't find whether it offers groups or not, though. And then I have the added problem of my content. We have over 1,200 works of fiction on my site that I would hate to just abandon. That many or MORE of artwork, too. I seriously doubt there is any way to migrate Ning content to SE.
I hear you. You could do it, no doubt. But, there can be challenges, especially on updates. Still thinking about you and other Ningsters in same situation - - will update you with any good ideas.
I can't do self-hosted, Jen. I wouldn't have a clue how to do that.
Writer Chick, phpFox is fairly technical, for what it's worth. There is a load of power under the hood, but a good deal to do to arrive at what you want. The biggest attraction for me on phpFox, other than it's super slick look, we should be able to build any needed app to work with phpFox. And, it's self-hosted (you have control of your destiny - - same with SocialEngine PHP). At the development and design level, shouldn't be any limitations with phpFox.
Have you looked into SocialEngine PHP yet? I've been waiting for their native responsive theme version. In fact, will probably lose my little mind when it's released. There is a lot of power there, reputable, great Team, lot of features, lot of drag/drop, etc...Troy could tell you even more. Once the software is installed (can be challenging), I think most Ning Creators could adapt to SocialEngine PHP quite well.
LOL, you guys are priceless. ;-)
Writer Chick, I definitely will. And, agree!

I would really appreciate you keeping your ear to the ground for me, Jen. But I just don't think there is anything comparable out there. I just wish a miracle would happen and they would restart development on 3.0. *sigh*
Hey Dianne & TJ! Good to see everyone... almost an old family reunion again :)
