This is a short and sweet reminder: When you receive a friend request, whether on this site or any site, be sure to investigate the potential new friend. It only takes a few minutes to check them out.

What to Check:

  • Their Profile page
  • Any links they provide
  • How many friends do they already have? This can be an indication that they are only interested in being your friend, to send you a lot of unsolicited emails - - or flat out: S-P-A-M.
  • Any content they've added - - are they contributing to the site?

Final Tips:

  • By briefly analyzing this type of information, you are likely to ward-off any future issues.
  • Be particularly cautious if someone requests friendship, shortly after they join a site. This is often an indication, they are up to no good. ;-)
  • And last but not least, do not feel guilty if you do not want to accept a friendship request. So what if you don't? That is your decision.

Would I be allowed to copy this text and add it to my site so that my users can be safe as well?
Sure! If you can give credit to our site, that would be awesome. If you can't, that's okay too.
Best,
Jen
Thanks Jen I used this graphics, so my members know where I get such fantastic tips.

Excellent advice thank you.
were starting to require that people put their own pictures up as avatars so we can see who they are initially then once they are on, they are welcome to change their avatars.
Path of the Craft,

ho do i get that badge so that we could post it to our sites.. i will be more than happy to help in anyway possible.
I think I posted the images in a group. I'll try to find it.
I have another question... we do get members, but then they just stick to the page and read nd lurk, they never post.. I'd hate to drive them off, and Ive asked politely a bunch of times to come in toparticipate.. I am always saying the door is always open, please give us your suggestions.. our group is still so fledgling that I dont want to offend anyone by saying you can be here if you dont post.

what can I do about non participating members?
I really don't know about this one. I know on one of my sites (a Pet site), I have a lot of members that aren't active. That's okay with me, as long as they are respectful of others when they do come online. A lot of them just want to list their pets names and upload photos - - a myspace page for their pet, and that's okay. But, this is a different situation. So, like I said, I really don't know what to advise on this one. Maybe some other members here can give could advise.
Best,
Jen
see I agree with that one... i really dont mind.. but i know that some network owners do get crazy when people lurk.

i am just hoping one day something sparks their interest.. I really dont like talking with myself all the time
