Hi Jen and all

We have started having a problem with people creating fake sign-ups to our network

There is of course a Captcha on the registration log in page

But people seem to be able to register and then go into the profile creation form and just spam it

We have been having sometimes 5 a day recently

All they are doing is going through our questions - putting in 2 letters on each question and then sending the form off.

Of course we stop them becoming a member but these spammers are wasting a lot of our time!

Any idea how to stop this?

best

Hi Andrew,

I get a lot of them, too. You could try adding email confirmation and a signup question, first. If that doesn't work, you may have to start approving members. I approve them on 2 sites, and it doesn't take that long to do.

Best of luck,

Jen

Hi Jen

It's good to know its not just us!

I was reading about having a signup question (quiz) as an additional option to the Captcha.

We do approve all members by the way.

I guess its more just a hassle.

What IS interesting is the realisation that Captcha's aren't a guaranteed way to stop spamming like this.

Presuming the spamming isn't being done manually that is! If in fact it is humans doing it - well can you imagine someone sitting there doing that all day long!

Hugs to you from both of us!

Hope you didn't mind my rant the other night!

Actually I am trying an experiment.

Some of the questions we ask on our profile could have had a multiple choice answer instead of a text answer

For instance one of the questions we have on our profile is

Are you involved with a locally-based organisation or group in your region?

Previously we had the answer set as a 'One Line Answer'

Underneath it we have the question

If yes, please could you tell us more:

With answer set as 'Long Answer'

What I have now done is to make the first question

a) Compulsory

b) Multiple Choice - Yes or No

Which is logical as a question and not some quiz type question. So lets see if that works!

Hugs

Andrew
