I too have tried many chat apps in the past 3 years. I've tried everything from Meebo to Chatango, from Skysa bar to the Wibiya Bar Chat. The smoothest box I've ever used is the cbox.ws. They charge a small fee (very small) for 2-3 years use for premium, and probably still have a free version. It's not real fancy, but has plenty of great and solid features, and is customizable.

Also, I've heard several Network Creators say good things about blendapps and the ability to integrate with Ning.

I've tried them too, but it's been a long time - - and many improvements since then.
