Hi Jen and everyone,

I was reading about splash pages from various topics here, but still not sure.

The ning pro seems too expensive ($35/mo more than the $25 I'm paying now) since my only benefit is the splash page.

It seems the best (cheapest) way is to host it offsite... so I guess I need some instructions for that.  Can anyone link me to that, I'm sure it's already posted here.

I want to have a video (thinking of hosting that on amazon servers because it's over 100mb which is the limit for ning I understand).

and I want to have an email lead capture... sort of a squeeze page... but I want people to be able to click past that in case they've seen the intro video.

wondering the best way to set this up.

thanks!

p.s. anyone who has done this, please comment with your site so I can check it out!

www.cayugan.com ... I have a wordpress installation (which I have on an independent server...but you probably could set up a free one on www.wordpress.com) as the front page and a button link to take those that want to go the Ning network.

You also can create a simple html splashpage and redirect it/link it to your Ning network. However, I believe a paid server space is the only practical way to engineer that, if you want to use your own domain.

You have loads of options, too many for me to detail in this space but I would seriously consider paying for a hosted server space to a few dollars a month. Certainly the most economical method and one that allows for loads of different options. Hostgator is $10 monthly and you can have unlimited sites...many domain names along with hundreds of sub domains.

I've never added a tip to create an external splash page. I wouldn't be able to offer this, due to so many scenarios.

I can try to provide the basics.

Basically, you would do the following:
  • Create an HTML page with an HTML Editor
  • Upload to your external file server
  • From your domain panel (hosting company), forward your dot.com to the splash page HTML - - instead of using Tools/Domain Mapping from your Ning Dashboard. So, when someone enters your dot.com, it will forward them to the splash page.
  • Within your splash page, add this link to access yourning.com home page:
  • Change your home tab to the same: http://yourning.com/index.php

Hopefully I'm not leaving anything out. And, if you're already using a domain mapping redirect for your ning site, from yourdot.com to your.ning.com, this will cause you issues.

Best Regards,

Jen
