I am totally baffled by the fact that when I put Google Ads on my Ning site that I get a lot of the ones where it's the "Public Service" ads... like it can't find a better ad to put there.  I have over 7,500 members, over 80,000 tagged images, 1,300 discussions, etc. and when I go to any of these I get that blank placeholder ad.

Any trick to getting better ads to show up? Is there a way to embed into the text box "meta keywords" that the ads will draw from?

I need something!

I second this request. I still cannot figure out how to target my advertising better with Google adsense. Can somebody point us to a guide or tutorial that is simple and easy to understand.

* Contextual targeting
Our technology uses such factors as keyword analysis, word frequency, font size, and the overall link structure of the web, in order to determine what a webpage is about and precisely match Google ads to each page.

I really don't know any major special tricks. All I can do is offer these tips that I use:
1. Bold on important keywords within text boxes, discussions, etc...
2. Repeat your important keywords throughout your site, focusing on home page and top of site. For example: on JenSocial you will see the words "Social Network Directory" in my hidden site description, keywords, welcome paragraph (notice the repeat of the word Social).
3. Try to keep fresh content, and good content, at the top of your home page, otherwise the Google Ads will get stale and show the same ads over and over.

Also, although many sites add Google Adsense via iframes, I wonder if that doesn't hurt us tremendously when we do this. Be sure to have at least one adsense unit in a regular text box.

I have yet to figure out the Google Adsense optimization animal. JenSocial should make more on Google Adsense than it does, based on traffic, unique visitors, page views etc... Someday I'll hire an Expert to help out with this.

When I check my account and see the CPM is higher or lower than normal, I sit here and shake my head trying to figure it out!

Effective CPM
Effective cost-per-thousand impressions (eCPM) is a useful way to compare revenue across different channels and advertising programs. Essentially, effective CPM represents your estimated earnings for every 1000 impressions you receive.

Effective CPM doesn't represent how much you have actually earned -- rather, it's calculated by dividing your estimated earnings by the number of page impressions, then multiplying by 1000. For example, if you earned an estimated $0.15 from 25 page impressions, then your page eCPM would equal ($0.15 / 25) * 1000, or $6.00. If you earned an estimated $180 from 45,000 ad impressions, your ad eCPM would equal ($180 / 45,000) * 1000, or $4.00.

Maybe someone else with more expertise will come along and give us all some better tips. I'm pretty good with SEO and have a good deal of knowledge in that arena. However, I'm far from being an Expert with the Google Adsense and the Google Analytics for that matter. I really need to gain more knowledge on both. It takes me every minute I can grab on to, just to keep up with technology overall, and especially with all the Social Media and Social Networking topics.

Best,
Jen
