Social Web Directory :: Social Network Directory :: Ning Tips and Ning Support
Jamroom is a modular open source Community CMS that is uniquely customizable and powerful.
Running on your own server, you have 100% privacy and control of your own system.
It has been powering thousands of sites worldwide since 2003.
A few months ago we were approached by a Ning user, unhappy with the way Ning was going and with their their lack of progress, updates and support. He asked if we could import his site from Ning to Jamroom. Investigation showed that this was indeed possible and straightforward to do, and spawned the 'Ning to Jamroom' project and the development of a module to take an exported Ning site archive of all members, their content, items and comments, and import it into a Jamroom site that replicates all Ning functionality (and adds a load more).
This project has now matured and has been taken up by many more Ning users who are now either running a 'live' version of their Ning site, are making the move, or are using Jamroom for their new sites and ideas. They are also contributing to a lively Jamroom forum helping more potential 'ex-Ningsters' out as well as fielding questions, suggestions and comments to us Jamroom developers (which we appreciate, of course).
If you think Jamroom might be the way forward for you, please checkout the links below. If you have any questions, please ask - we would look forward to seeing you on the forum.
Thanks

OMG... Jamroom just keeps getting better every week. They just upgraded my server RAM for me (free of course for all their hosting plan customers), I didn't have to lift a finger. I went to get a cup of coffee in my kitchen and it was done.
The all new Jamroom 5 with 160 plugins/modules, mobile integrated from the ground up (because yes), amazing hands-on support team, easy Site Builder tool, low price, and super HOT new skins and themes...
Feel the heat and run for cover ...now where'd I leave my sunscreen?
Thank you, Paul, very helpful. I'll read again later, walking out door.
Best,
Jen
Hi Jen - Sure thing . . .
A very brief summary is in the table on this page -
https://www.jamroom.net/pricing
Putting that into words, Jamroom Hosted is where we provide you with your own Linode VPS server specifically set up to provide the highest performance possible for your Jamroom site. You can create as many domains as you want on this server and Jamroom will be pre-installed on every one. We take care of server maintenance, backups etc., but also provide you with a Hosting Control Panel where you can take control yourself if need be. You also get free access to ALL Jamroom modules and skins to run on your Hosted domains, as well as VIP (24 hour response but often a lot quicker) support. Our various Hosted plans can be seen here - https://www.jamroom.net/hosting
Jamroom Premium is a one time buy of ALL Jamroom modules and skins (afrer downloading the free set of Core modules and skins) that can be used on up to two domains. The saving, should all modules be bought seperately is well in excess of $1000! VIP support is then a subscription service, or you can use the regular forum support. You do need to provide your own hosting for Jamroom and this can be from any of the 100s (1000s?) of hosting providers out there on the www, though we would recommend you avoid the 'ultra-cheap' providers as we have found their shared servers are often inconsistent and rarely perform well in the long term. Minimum server requirements are here - https://www.jamroom.net/the-jamroom-network/documentation/getting-s...
With Jamroom Open Source, you provide the hosting and optionally subscribe to VIP support, as described above, and then download and install the free Core set of modules and skins, buying additional modules and skins on an ad hoc basic, as you need them.
Hope that helps
Paul
Hi Paul,
If you see this, can you give us a brief overview of the differences between JR Hosted and Premium self-hosted, other than one is hosted by you, and the other is by the Webmaster on their own server. How do the overall features differ?
Thanks,
Jen
I am in the process of building my new social network on Jamroom. They are AWESOME, and provide one-on-one support second to NONE.
Once I'm done building the basics up I'm moving OFF Ning and will never look back. I'm a non-coder so it's taking me a little while to learn how to tweak my site...but I'm getting there with their terrific help. I love Jamroom and its providers! I've already imported my entire ning archive into my JR site TWICE successfully- their import tool works very well. :)
