Show 100+ discussions from specific Group on one page, so your members can scroll through the list.

I had a need to display all Discussions on one page, from a special Group - - the Ning Tips. It's a situation where I want members to be able to scroll through the entire list, without having to change pages. In fact, here's the link that allows you to scroll through all of our Ning Tips:
http://theningdirectory.ning.com/group/ningnetworktips/forum?pageSi...

Here's the link to accomplish this:
http://yourning.ning.com/group/groupname/forum?pageSize=#

  1. Replace yourning with your Ning Network Name.
  2. Replace groupname with your Group Name.
  3. Replace pageSize # with the number of Discussion items you want to display on one page.
  4. Once your link is ready, a great way to give access to your Members, is by adding a menu tab or sub-tab under the same type content. For example, here on the Ning Directory, I added a sub-tab under the main tab: Tips via Manage/Tab Manager.
I called it "Scroll Through All Tips", and the URL I used for the sub-tab is:
    /group/ningnetworktips/forum?pageSize=160

This may be limited to 100 discussions. It's get a little difficult trying to figure out how many are on one page. I think >100, it's gets a little unreliable. But, it's sure nice to see so many on one page.

Maybe one of Ning's Engineers will see this discussion, and let us know the limitations, for sure.

Summary of what this tip is used for:
This tip came about because I really wanted to show more tips on one page, so members did not have to click on the page numbers like, 2,3,4,5 NEXT etc... But, where they could scroll through all the tips, on one page.

So, when you have a Group with a lot of discussions (posts), and a member clicks on View All, they see something like this:

I want to show as many discussions on one page as possible. And, that's the purpose of this tip.

Enjoy,
Jen

NOTICE AND DISCLAIMER:

I really want to find out from Ning how this works - - exactly how their pageSize parm works. For example, I'm fairly certain that it doesn't display 100's of discussions one after another. It appears to display so many, and not show the page number buttons. So, this isn't a perfect science, for sure. But on the upside: I really like being able to scroll through a lot of posts, all on one page. When I use this, I add both the regular link and the "scroll through" link.

Hi Angels Launch,
This is a nice way to add a sub-tab under a main tab. For example, here, I've added a sub-tab under Tips, titled: Scroll Through All Tips, with the link:
http://theningdirectory.ning.com/group/ningnetworktips/forum?pageSi...

This way, members can go to main Group for Tips, as normal. Or, they can view 100+ tips on one page.

Hope that helps,
Jen
I don't get it
Hi Ladiesofthehat.net, hmmm, let me try to explain a little better. I understand the reason, I just don't get how to get in to work on my site....any help is greatly appreciated!
Even if you understood the reason, you helped me out on the overall tip. I added the summary I gave you, to the main tip. I don't think the tip was clear enough. So thanks.

Can you give me a little more information on how you're wanting to utilize the tip? I'll be happy to help out, if I understand.
:-)
Jen
so where do I put the link with the #100 on my site? This is what I don't understand.
Here on the Ning Directory, I add a sub-tab under the main tab: Tips via Manage/Tab Manager.
I called it "Scroll Through All Tips", and the URL I used for the sub-tab is:
/group/ningnetworktips/forum?pageSize=160
Angels Launch,
Yeah, this is actually a very powerful little tip. Once it clicks, a lot of people will love this. ;-) I'm thinking maybe I didn't do such a good job explaining what this tip is for - - I'll improve the tip, soon.

You are more than welcome to add our link, and thank you if you do. Reason: although we only approve membership for Ning Network Creators, since it is the NingDir; a lot of people come here (and that's what we want), to find Social Networks (like yours).

Best,
Jen
OK Jen! I GOT IT NOW. thanks so much!!!
Ladiesofthehat.net,
Good deal, and my pleasure.
:-)
This is such a great tip!  I was wondering if there is way to do this for "Featured" Blogs and discussions?

This doesn't appear to work for any Featured items, sorry. I tried and the query won't work.

Best,

Jen
