Chat Box - Add the Ning Chat to a Menu Tab. (no longer works in iframe)

According to my findings, you can no longer place the chat box into a new page, inside an iframe. I found this on LiveWired's site: This hack no longer functions with Ning's latest chat update, please remove it from your social network.

However, you can add the PopUp Link to a Menu Tab.


A lot of Network Creators (NCs) would love to have the new Ning Chat (PopUp/PopOut) accessible from a main menu tab, like it used to be. Although the new Chat is a flash based module, it can be accessed via this link: /chat/index/popOutWindow

This is not an elaborate solution. It's simply a way to GIVE NOTICE to your Chat. Unfortunately as mentioned above, this link (page) can no longer be placed in a new page, within an iframe - - which would simulate a real box. This solution is a PopUp. The only difference between this, and your members clicking on the PopOut Icon from the ChatBar: Members can see the Chat menu tab.

This is a good way to show newbies your Chat Room, and then show them the ChatBar if they hadn't noticed it yet.

Instructions:
1. Go to Manage/Tabs. Create a new Menu Tab, and name it Chat.

2. Add this code for the URL/Link:
/chat/index/popOutWindow

And you're done.

Hello, first thanks for the cool tip, however when i am logged in a admin it works fine when i logg in a demo it throws the page back to the main page instead of loading the chat box. Any suggestions?

ON NO! Me too. I am SO SORRY. I had no clue! I will work on this today, and see if there's a way around this issue. I signed into a demo account and had the same thing happen. I'm so glad you brought this to my attention. I don't know that I would have ever caught this.

I will give an update here, when I find out if there's a work around.

I have bad news richmo58. It no longer works in an iframe. I apologize for the inconvenience. I just didn't know. Please read the new tip above. Now, it's just a tip on adding the link to a menu tab. Again, so sorry for giving this tip, just to find out it doesn't work.

after i did what you said to do...Problems...however...I just made the chat open into another window ...problem solved! thanks...
