Due to a recent Ning Security update, this tip stopped working. Ning Engineer: Jon Aquino has fixed the code for us. The tip is now a simple box, with no background as I had before. I actually like it better. It works well and is easy to install.

All you need to do is copy/paste the attached code to a text box on your home page. There are 2 versions, one for wide column and one for a narrow column.

Enjoy, and thanks to Ning Engineer Jon we can use this again!

Is there a way to have the updates post to the main page without the update taking the member to their profile page first?

Hi Adrian,

I never could figure it out, sorry. TJ of http://jqueryhelp.ning.com/ may have an answer on that.

Best Regards,

Jen

Hi Jen. I have combined your version and TJ's on my netwotk using columns to align the buttons.

Below is the code after textarea.

It looks great (very neutral) but somehow the counter and posting to twitter don's seem to work.

Any suggestions ?

<table border="0" cellspacing="0" width="454" align="left">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td style="text-align: left;" colspan="4" width="25%" valign="top">
<div class="twitter-checkbox easyclear"><input id="twitter" class="checkbox left" title="Twitter" name="postToTwitter" type="checkbox" value="1" /> <label class="post_to_twitter" title="Twitter" for="twitter">Twitter</label></div>
</td>
<td style="text-align: left;" colspan="4" width="50%" valign="top">
<div class="form-hint clear easyclear xj_hint_container"><span class="char-limit xj_remaining_count">140</span></div>
</td>
<td style="text-align: right;" colspan="4" width="25%" valign="top"><button class="xj_submit"><span>Bijwerken</span></button></td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</div>
</div>

Hi Martin,

I am sorry. I tried for hours one evening, and never got this to work (the twitter counter and posting). I would LOVE to help you, sincerely I would. But, so far, no luck with this. Maybe I can revisit someday.

Best to you,

Jen

Never mind. Sometimes I wonder why NING doen't pick up your most popular tips and make it a standard feature.  The ideal place would be returning on every page in or just below the header .

I really expect Ning to offer this in the future, and one reason why I haven't spent any more brain cells on it. LOL!

Thanks Martin, and have a great weekend,

Jen

Another thing that might be on the notorious roadmap.     :-)

True - - slow but sure? ;-)

Hmmm. for some reason when I click update, it just hangs on both wide and narrow. I;ve been looking for a way to display a second activity feed which shows just status updates. Any thoughts Jen? I assume this is not the solution right?

I've been trying to get to your question on that. I don't know of a way to display a second activity feed other than grabbing the Latest Activity RSS, but it'll be the same as your first feed.

I don't know why this code for the status update is hanging up.  I'm not including the site token within the code. I wonder if that's breaking it. I have this question into Ning, and will let you know when I hear back.

Best,

Jen

what is this for? if on my home page, and one adds text where does it go?
ADD STATUS BOX TO HOME PAGE: As the instructions state   - - "All you need to do is copy/paste the attached code to a text box on your home page. There are 2 versions, one for wide column and one for a narrow column."
