What Would You Do If The Internet No Longer Existed?

Tonight I was reading about the Anti-government protests in Egypt, and how the Internet was "down", and about the protests outside the capital. And I'll stop there, because I don't know enough to give any valuable commentary.

Point is: This made me start thinking about the Internet and it's existence.

What would people do if they no longer had access to the Internet, period? Not that it never existed - - but that you've had it this long, and poof, it's gone!

What if the Internet completely disappeared, no more access, ever? I realize this is an over-the-top hypothetical question. But seriously, I'm curious. What would you do?

  • How would your life change?
  • What would be your future plans?
  • How would it effect your business? Obviously if your business is entirely online, you would have some big decisions to make.
  • How would it effect your personal life?

P.S. I just checked my email, and I received this shared discussion two times. If you did, I apologize. I definitely only shared it one time.

Dear Jen,

I may read magazines....

But The Business who is dependant upon this Internet they will have to think.....what they will do ?Because my son has a Soft ware business and I think Now There can be a big revolution because no body even studets can live with out it....
SohiniBen.

I think the interesting part of this is: we think we can't live without it. ;-)

Thank you for your input, very nice answers.

Best Regards,

Jen

My My Jen, as you are aware the internet is my life but I must point out one thing here and only one, because everything else is trivial.  The internet is a part of the economy an if it no longer exist then it would be pure chaos because not just a few people we would be without a job but millions maybe even 100's of millions world wide and that could create a domino effect. No income, no banking, no deliveries which would result in no food, medicine and supplies.  Power utility would cease to operate since they are control via internet.  Land line will cease.  Transportation would slow to a crawl.

This is just a tad of what I could think of but it would be chaos.

My 2 cents

Definitely interesting thought process, and I agree. But I do wonder, could we not eventually start a new way of life, and survive? Chaotic beyond words, no doubt.

Thank you for your astute answers Ralphy,

Jen

Of course we could but the initial response would be quite devastating, since we tend to lean towards the internet, although it would help if we had an contingency plan in-store for this type of disaster.  If we know of it now, we really should incorporate a plan to protect the people.

thanks Jen

No Internet  Mmmmmmmmmmm, I would interact with people who actually affect my life on a daily personal level.

I love the internet and would feel a true sense of loss if it was not there, but I think it could improve my life in a way, because at the moment I spend many hours a day interacting for many hours with people that I will never meet and who will have no  immediate effect on my life and I spend little time meeting and interacting with people around me.

That said, I would be lost without my fix of Cyber chat.

MY OWN SPACE 360,

Your comments - - "...because at the moment I spend many hours a day interacting for many hours with people that I will never meet and who will have no  immediate effect on my life and I spend little time meeting and interacting with people around me." Bravo, and well spoken! And maybe we all should consider spending some more time with those who truly effect our lives.

Initially, I would be lost. It could probably be compared to a Drug Addict weaning off drugs. But in the end, other than Ralphy's realistic economical viewpoints, I would probably get my life back. ;-)

Best,

Jen

I would have more time to play the jew's harp and sing overtones :-)

... and reading the newspaper instead ...

I guess I'd do what I did BEFORE we even had Internet (yes, I'm that old).  I'd read voraciously.  I'm a librarian and I've literally read thousands and thousands of books in my lifetime.  The internet has changed the way I read AND the content of what I read.  With it gone, I'd returned to my beloved books.

It would make me very sad though, to lose contact with the many cyber-friends I've made.  I guess there would be a return to old-fashioned letter writing too.

I don't use the internet for business purposes.  It's just a hobby for me.  But I do my banking on there, use it for research (in lieu of the library, I'm sorry to say), read the daily news, gossip, check my mail (who uses snail mail anymore?), chat in real time with friends all over the world...and the list goes on.

If the internet ever disappeared, an entire way of life would disappear.  Older folks like me would adjust because I've lived in a technology-free world before. But the younger generation??  It would be very traumatic for them...much like the Great Depression was traumatic to THAT whole generation of people.

*shudder*  It's scary to think about...

Writer Chick,

Love the fact that you're a Librarian. :-)

I agree, and in regards to your last comment, "It's scary to think about..."

Although, obviously, I adore technology and the Internet, it is scary to me what the Internet (especially FB) and texting has done to our children and our future Leaders. What is the future? Are we destined to become a Society that has no social graces and no sense of responsibility? Writer Chick, those questions not directed at you of course. ;-)

Best,

Jen

Oh, I agree with you, Jen.  I teach middle school kids and it's mind-boggling to realize that this generation of kids has NO CONCEPT of personal privacy!  I teach classes to my students all the time about the Internet and how inappropriate it is to post personal information/pictures online.  (Facebook is the prime cuplrit here.)  They truly have no concept of the permanence of information once it's posted.  They think if they hit the delete button it's gone.  Some are amazed to realize that their nude picture of themselves, which sat on FB for only a few minutes, could have very easily resulted in hundreds of "right clicks" and that now that picture could be saved on just as many hard drives by people they don't even know!!

My children literally can't survive without their phones.  When the drama starts, I say...."Uh...just turn the darn thing off.  Drama over!"  They look at me like I've lost my ever-loving mind!!  LOL

I once read a quote, and I can't remember it exactly, but it struck a chord with me.  It was something about the falling away of letter writing.  Because a love letter is something you can pull out over and over again and read and cherish many times.  A text, once it's sent, is gone.  Unless you save it. But even then...how romantic is a text?  You can't spray perfume on it so that the scent will linger years later.  You can't include a lock of hair with it to rub between your fingers....*sigh*

I agree, love letters were so wonderful.

And seriously, here I am, the Internet is my business and my expertise. However, I have great grave concerns about our children. :(

I honestly see a difference in kids when I venture out into the real World. I'm a very social and friendly person, never ever meet a stranger. And a lot of it I realize is all a part of getting older. But I've always had a special connection to kids, and still do for the most part. However, kids I don't know, it's amazing to me how rude and non-responsive they can be.

Even when I went out to Palo Alto for the Ning Council Summit, and I shall name no names, LOL. I couldn't get over at how many of the younger Ning Team members were glued to their computers and smart phones. When I left and was trying to say thank you for inviting me, the particular person I was speaking directly to, was saying goodbye as they "texted". How alarming is that?
