I run a music network and the loss of a music player will be significant. We were looking for an upgrade to the ning player for some time and that seems to be now dead. Is it possible for a number of music networks to get together and come up with a brief for a new music player, and appoint a respected designer to solve the problem, test it on one of our new 3.0 test networks and implement it across the agreed networks. The cost could be spread, we have 15-18 months to sort it out. If we had 10-20 networks alone that would spread the costs significantly.
Maybe I am dreaming and maybe you will tell me technically there are issues. Your thoughts.

Hi Tony,
I am not good at tech stuff, and like you I dread the switch to NING 3. I built my music site all by myself several years ago. I'm not interested in having my site forcefully made 'modern and sleek', but I have no choice.
I see your network and my network both have about 3,500 members, and share an interest in traditional music.
I too lament the changes in music player and videos.
Perhaps we can benefit by sharing things we learn or solve about the upcoming NING changes.
Here is my network: http://mountaindulcimer.ning.com/

Strumelia,
Have been a fan of your site for a while now!
Best of luck with the new,
Jen
Wow, thanks Jen!
We shall see what develops over the coming year. I need the new NING 3 like a hole in the head- my members are supremely happy just the way things are!
sigh....
Hi Strumelia,
Your content is great. I hope it all works out for you.
Best Regards,
Jen
Tony,
I think it could be possible, but the hosting (bandwidth and server space) would be a significant cost factor. I think you would be better served to find a 3rd party app that you could integrate with your site. I'm keeping my eyes open.
Best Regards,
Jen
The problem does not reside with finding a music player. The problem with the music player is that dues must be paid to ASCAP and BMI who very well may not even approve of a music player. Of course, you can always do something illegal and may even get away with it. I have no idea, what is legal or not. Maybe someone with some time can find this out.
Hi Carny- Both Tony and I run networks specializing in traditional music. I don't know about Tony, but on my current network we have been very strict about members uploading ONLY traditional/public domain music in both our video section and in our music player. We have no copyrighted material in either section, as far as we've been able to police. My five moderators and I spend a lot of effort in enforcing this on my site, so for us it's sort of a non-issue.
Hi FOMD
I like your site. We have some common members I see. Thats cool. I likewise moderate to ensure members only upload music that is their own. Jens comment re server space is probably the bigger of the issues. Maybe we can find an app as Jen says. I remain hopeful. T
Tony, on my site, the members use videos way more often than they use the music player. This is because many of them are learning from watching the people play just as much as from hearing them play. The video section plays a huge part on my site. The loss of the music player would not be a terrible loss for me, but the video issues would be devastating. I am curious- Is this true for your site as well? If so, then we could concentrate on the video aspect of this NING3 changeover.
