Is Ning Keeping Their Promises? i.e. Ning in iFrame, and Ning Apps On Home Page...

Is Ning Keeping Their Promises?

I say things are looking very positive.

Recently, according to the Ning Developer's Network, in the near future, Ning Network Creators will have the ability to add Ning Apps to the Ning Home Page. This is great news, considering the Apps tend to get lost under tabs. To be able to add one good application that applies nicely to your Network, will be a welcomed feature.

My only concern is page load time. I do hope Ning Apps are robust enough to be installed on a Ning home page, and not slow down the page load times too much. Regardless, this is still exciting news. Because it shows that Ning is serious about focusing on "premium" Ning Networks and Features.

This news and information originated from the Ning Developer's Network:

  • Allow Ning Apps to be placed on the Main page of a Ning Network.
  • Increase the limit of installable Ning Apps on a network from 5 to 10.
  • The main page view will be displayed in the center column of the network. Note from Jen: In other words, it sounds like that Ning Apps can only be added to the wide column, understandably.
  • The maximum width for the view is 492px. Anything smaller will be centered within the column.

After all the hoopla of the big announcement by Ning about "no more free Ning Networks", it does seem that Ning is moving forward with their promise of focusing on great Features, and adding more control for Ning Network Creators.

Im still disappointed that I will be (and hundreds of others like me) are losing our free sites after all the work we put into them. But whatever...
This all seem a little too much for me to understand because l am not computer smart abot things. And if l do want it okay, l guess but do we have to have it?
Fantasyland,
Nothing to be concerned about if it's not something you wanted. Many Network Creators including myself, have begged for Ning to stop breaking the frames when an outside service displays a Ning Network within a frame (a window on their site). When the frame is broken, it makes the Ning Network unusable. For example, if someone shares your site with services like Digg, Stumbleupon, etc... the visitor would see the weird frame breaking screen. And you would likely lose that visitor. This is a very good thing. It will basically be transparent for those who don't want to embed a Ning Site, say on their WordPress Blog or somewhere like that.

On the Ning Apps, that just means that you will be able to add those Ning Apps (under Manage/Tabs/Ning Apps) to the home page if you want - - in the future.
Best,
Jen
However , to also keep in mind while using the players it also chops at the bandwidth everytime the player starts up ; we have very low and easy to go over bandwidth quota on the 20 dollard per month account wich seems to be the type of account of the majority so far!
I am witht Temple of Our Lady of the Moon. I feel we were jilted. And the timing couldn't have been worse. Why do it in the summer months when some of us have good weather and things to do.
Women Surviving Abuse,
On this particular GOOD news, you will not see anything change. It's nothing to be concerned about if it's not something you wanted. Don't worry one minute. It's just something that many Network Creators including myself, have begged for Ning to stop breaking the frames when an outside service displays a Ning Network within a frame (a window on their site). When the frame is broken, it makes the Ning Network unusable. For example, if someone shares your site with services like Digg, Stumbleupon, etc... the visitor would see the weird frame breaking screen. And you would likely lose that visitor. i read the original article on ning developers last week and thought i was seeing things. this is great news indeed, as it appears ning is working hard towards making it possible for us to have more control over our networks as well as to optimize functionality.

to those who say this stuff is over their heads, stop saying that and learn what you must to make your networks worth the time and money you've invested in it. i was homeless when i built my network, and barely knew anything about web 2.0, html, iframes, etc. i learned much of it while living on the street from people like jen here and others. you shouldn't be afraid of your networks, afraid to learn something new, especially when it is to your benefit.
The Kingdomz X ,
Excellent points. ;-)
I'm concerned about the speed issue as well but am looking forward to seeing it. Hopefully these additions will only help the key analytics factors jump up so advertisers are willing to pay. Are they 3rd party apps or are these apps that Ning is creating and offering?
Hi My Neighbors in Clinton,
These are the Ning Apps that currently exist, I think. Some of them like "Top Friends" were created by Ning. I think this move will encourage more application developers to create robust apps for the Ning platform. Let's think about it. If they (Developer) have the option of their App possibly being placed on a home page, instead of just a "tucked away" page, the visibility is so much greater, and the incentive for quality development will be higher.
Thank you for your input and thoughts on this.
Best,
Jen
have the ability to add Ning Apps to the Ning Home Page, this is BS...why??..it would affect the load time / banwidth, which will make the load time a bit slower, and that's where the greed comes in.....HOW!!!

Ning will ask for a $$$FEE $$$ as an option to make your home page load faster!!!!!!!! If you don't take this option your stuck with slow load time.......

HAHAHAHAA, business strategy or we call it bull sh#T
I do not see how you can come to these conclusions. It's simply an option that Ning Networks will have in the future.
Best,
Jen
