How to get the funds to Convert Free Ning Sites into Premium?

I posted this at Creators too, hoping we can get some good ideas rolling...

I do not want to leave Ning, I have built a community that I do not want to lose.

I was hoping that the premium sites could share some ideas with the free site NCs. On my site we typically do not sell merchandise, services or advertising, or at least not enough to support a premium site. Its just a place for like-minded people to get together.

I am not asking anyone to share secrets or give me a lesson in marketing, just a few ideas of what works.

Donate button? Fund Raisers? Ads? Sponsors? Partnerships? What is most effective?

ditto, best place to start, hit up local riding gear places and clubs. Offer clubs that dont have a web presence a change to have a private group on your site to communicate, small fee/mo, done.

Ive had 40 bucks donated within 2 hours of posting a message about Ning's new approach. All I have is under 150 members, so I dont expect much more to come in at all, but it worked!
