Hi David,
On a lot of screen resolutions, this area of the screen will not be available. If you floated code in this location, on smaller resolutions it would cover the site content. The alternative would be to insert somewhere inside and to left of the ID for #div.xg_body. I would advise against this, and consider it a can of worms. Maybe one of the NCs on Creators would bite. Sorry, I wouldn't take this on even as a Custom Project.
