DIR stands for

D Developmental understanding where the child is developmentally. So a treatment program can be set up according to that child's needs. There are six developmental milestones that every child needs to master for healthy social, emotional, and intellectual growth.

I stands for the individual difference. Every child is unique and has unique way of taking in sensations, such as touch, sight. smell, sound. This also refers to a child's individual challenges. and their various processing differences, that can directly interfere with learning and growing.

R is for relationship based. Caregivers, such parents, therapists play a critical role in a child's development. They can help these children move up the developmental ladder.

Floortime refers to being on the floor at the child's level. Playful interactions to help a child be wooed into a shared world, by using what they are interested in. We can help foster two way communication, creativity, problem solving and learning. Dr Stanley Greenspan M.D. and Dr Serena Wieder founded this approach.
