Hello! I'm new here so I'm hoping you'll all be kind and help me out while I struggle to set up my Ning properly...

I want to build a forum where people can discuss different topics within separate areas or categories.

Ning 3.0 doesn't seem to have an option to choose where users can sort the forum by category - instead it seems to only come up as which discussion was posted in last.

However conducive this might be to regular discussions, I have different groups of people who will want to "live" within separate areas of the forum.

Has anybody got any tips on how to do this?

(N.B. I have noticed that in Ning 2.0 there is a dropdown to the right of every forum offering the choice to sort between category or discussion (see picture). This is the type of thing I had in mind. The only place I have seen something similar is here! Drop down from Forum > Categories.)

Hi Katie,

Good question. Ning 3.0 displays the Category Titles as sub-menus on the main Forum List page, like here (BTW, if you don't want your links posted here, let me know. I needed an example.):

http://salescrowd.ning.com/the-crowd

What you could do is create sub-menu tabs under your Main Menu Tab "The Crowd". For example, for your Forum Category named "Industry News", click on the link Ning provides. Copy the URL from your main browser Address Bar (top left). In this case it is:

http://salescrowd.ning.com/the-crowd/Industry+News

Add that link as a sub-menu tab under "The Crowd".

Your category "Off Topic" link would be: http://salescrowd.ning.com/the-crowd/Off+Topic

TO ADD SUB MENU TABS:

  • Access your Dashboard for "Social Site Manager" -- 1st icon in Toolbar
  • Click on Sites & Pages
  • Click on + Add a Page
  • At top right choose "Page type" - Link.
  • Add the Tab title
  • Paste the URL you copied from the Address Bar
  • SAVE - Be sure to SAVE now.
  • Now, drag the tab in left column, under your Main Tab.
  • Click on "Make this a sub-tab"
  • SAVE

Hope that helps,

Jen

P.S. This looks harder to do than it is. Get the first one done, and it's a breeze.

Oh, thanks a lot for this info! I'll have another crack at it now and let you know the results :)

Katie
