The best way to accomplish this, is built-in. When you add your blogs and forums to your home page:
1. Locate your Blog or Forum Box.
2. Click on Edit (i.e., to right of Blog Posts Title)
3. Next to the From: Select "Recently Added" from the Drop Down Box.
4. Click on Save.
Take the same steps for your home page Forum box. The From selection is different. You could select "Latest Activity" or "Newest Discussions"

BTW, if you can show me a site where you saw this done in a different way, like direct links, let me know the site address; I can most likely tell you what they're doing.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. After you told me what to do...I copy the url for the page that showed all the latest posts; Paste it in the url for the subpage under forum and got it to work...sigh...wish it was easier than that! Lol
