A friend of mine runs the site shenzhenstuff.com. Here, each member has a ranking - the more you post and participate, the higher ranking you get. Jensocial has it here too - but called showcase ranking. As far as I know, Ning built this app itself, but they ended up getting rid of it for some reason (new owners or something, I can't remember), and have been trying to make a new way to rank members - so far unsuccessfully.

I hear that if a Ning network had this app before they discontinued it, you were allowed to keep it. But for a newcomer like me, it is impossible to get.

Anyways, if anyone knows how I can get this app now I would love to know how - or any other similar alternative.

Cheers,

The history of this, is, well, tragic, in a way. An org called SiteSuites started up and created several (applications) that were provided to subscribers to be embeddable in Ning. However Ning, then under different mgmt decided that these aps might break the code and were bought from the startup company and then discontinued. Those Ning users that had already subscribed were allowed to keep these aps on their site. I know, go figure. Makes no sense at all. Othere apps were the birthday ap and special sign up boxes etc. etc. Many of which HAVE been duplicated and integrated into Ning plans. However, Nings answer to the ranking app, evidently is the leaderboard, which most of us find, unsatisfactory and unusable and I might add... not upgraded since install that I can see. SiteSuites founder was a fellow named Vince. Yes he is on this site and will respond to you. His latest project is a website that is embeddable in Facebook Fan pages that turns into a mini web site within a fan page, allowing for full static sites to be emedded in a facebook welcome, sort of page. Jen can give you the details, I am sure, if you ask her. Vince is a pretty smart guy but I don't see him doing much more for Ning, at this point, but you never know. And since I know Ryan and Jana are probably reading this, I would have to give them a thumbs up and say that they did a wonderful job promoting and selling a great product. Best example to use would be an Edsel Ford, the original electric car, a beta recorder and alternating current, to compare with their efforts. It was great, but great products don't always win out, no matter how well they are sold.

Thanks Carny for the details!

Yes, I am not satisfied with the leaderboards either.

As the electric car is now able to come out, I am sure one day someone will be able to create a new way to rank our members! ...Perhaps this is a job for someone using Innocentive. If we pool some money together for a reward, perhaps we can have it created sooner than later. :)

I would LOVE to have the "Showcase Ranking" from here. I want it badly, myself, as I have a killer use for it. It will DEFINITELY increase people's activity on my site. Can anyone make a code where one can edit the name of the ranking system, and the images awarded?

Dave,

I explained via private email. Tom explained already above.

Best Regards,

Jen
