Is there a way to show members state by state, state directory, I have had members saying it would be good so they could start meeting and networking offline?

Greetings,
I have thought about that too but you know, I believe that would be way too much information given out. With hackers and stalkers, I wouldn't think that would fly. Tis sad too. What you could do, is start a "Where are you from" group internally within your own community to give members a choice on if they wish to share that much info with others.

Hi Karren,
There was a nice tip on the Ning Creator site about this. It was a drop down or links for states. I looked for 30 minutes and had a meltdown on the Ning Team about Ning Searches not working. I never found the tip, so sorry.

Basically, if you are using the location field in your profile questions, make sure it is added to the Advanced Search. Instruct your members to go to Advanced Member Search and enter states next to City/State. They'll have to search on possibilities like CA and California. Here are some examples of the search links. I used bikerspost since they have so many members and using the location field nicely.:
http://www.bikerspost.com/profiles/members/search?location=florida
http://www.bikerspost.com/profiles/members/search?location=ca
http://www.bikerspost.com/profiles/members/search?location=california

You could even add these type search strings to text links, and that would be nice for your members. Just replace bikerspost.com. I even think I wrote this tip once in a dropdown, but I cannot find it for the life of me.

Hope this helps get you going in the right direction.
Best,
Jen
I saw that tip, also. It was kind of complicated. But now I cannot find it either.
What I am doing is creating a group for each State and then blasting the members that live in or work in that state to join up.
Thanks for trying, Tom - - and for your advice. Maybe we'll find that tip, eventually. Or I'll get the time to write it.

BTW did you see my discussion on Creators about the Ning Search? I hope many NCs jump in and request that the Ning Search be fixed, after not working for 2 years.

I'm tired of it being ignored.

Best,
Jen
Hi Jen, thank you for that idea, I can pass this tip onto the members, I apreciate it. Maybe somone will remember where that was. I have seen this used on other networks a while back. Have a great day, Karren

Hi Jen, Ok I used the WYSIWYG, created a table, and proceded to create my State list.

I first found on google a list of states, then with each one I just created a hyperlink using your suggestion with my network inserted,

http://(your network)/profiles/members/search?location=ca

I tried using the full name of state at the end, however, it did not pick up all members on my network, so I suggest the state abbreviation.

Wahla I now have set up the state list for my network, including using a tab and when clicked on each state I can or member can see all members in that state, once created it shows the members profile photo, city and the link to comment directly to members profile page. Great for networking online and offline.

Thanks for your help Jen,

Karren
Excellent! If you have time, and want to share, it would be great if you could share the table with other Network Creators under tips. And if it's too tedious, don't try it.
Thanks!
Jen
