Jen you would probably know the answer to this question as you've modified the SI/SO box on the Ning Directory.

How do we get ours to look like yours on our Ning site? It's much easier for members to be able to login from the home page rather than having to click on Sign In and do it on another page. Do we have to have access to the full code for our network? I know by having access to the code we no longer receive automatic updates to our site but how difficult is it to do manually updates to our sites? I'm more interested in being able to format my site to my liking.

Thanks and God bless,

Russ

Hi Russ,
On the full code access: This was shocking to me when I found out. According to Ning Support Team, we can no longer have access to our full code. This happened when Ning shut down access to PHP files, after the widgetlaboratory fiasco. You could write and make sure, but that's what I understand to be the case. Thankfully, I stopped customizing my source code for another site, a few months before all that happened. Although, I don't care for the idea that we don't have full control - - of what I was told in the beginning was considered "open source", I do however like being on updates much better.

On the specific question of customizing the sign-in box, that is part of what was formerly a subscription service by a 3rd party called Scripts4Ning (S4N). As of a couple of months ago, Ning partnered (bought them out), and has shut down all new access to the S4N scripts. This is so Ning can focus on developing for the platform. So, the good news is: Ning is working on offering the Scripts4Ning scripts to all Ning Networks, free. They have not promised to roll-out all of the scripts, but I hope so. I know they are announcing them over time, like the birthday script. Give it time, and scripts like Who's Online (I sure hope), will be free to all networks. I hope the existing customers, like here, do not lose any of the scripts. But, only time will tell.

Sorry for the not so good news - - for now. But, hopefully Ning will introduce the sign-in box script as a standard Ning Site feature.
Best,
Jen
Thanks Jen!!

That's too bad about the full code but, que sera sera. We can only hold our breath as to the scripts. I'm not familiar with the widget laboratory issue but common sense tells me it wasn't something good. I'll make do with what we get until something better comes along.

Have a great day!!
Hey guys, on my site I made a signin-box, the box you see on this site I made also, later s4n modified it a little by adding "terms of service".

I have a runnig version here: http://port-richmond.com

and herehttp://polamtravel.com

at this point it's not a plug-and-play for any site, but what I have can be modified for any site.

Wow Peter! You mean, you wrote the code for the sign-in, first? I am very impressed, to say the least! And, not too keen on folks taking other's ideas. Why don't you offer a service charge to do this for some of our Network Creators. Since Ning didn't commit to WHAT S4N scripts they would offer to all Ning Networks, only time will tell if/when the sign-in will become available. You are welcome to advertise it here.
Thanks,
Jen
