As to Social Go. They have a fine operation, but I don't believe that they provide a mobile reach like Ning. Although many of us have had our differences with Ning, it is doubtful that anybody can provide a better service. The cheapest way is time consuming but you would get a host, install wordpress and then buddy press. Not that glamorous but with a LOT of tweaking, it is an acceptable alternative. All that said, in my opinion Ning or Social Go...all the others either don't do the job or are too costly. Just IMHO.
Recommendations of fellow members seems to be a Facebook, only feature. But read this about the invite system changes and whats on the roadmap (could be a long time, if ever) http://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/new-invite-members-from-addit... I don't think automatic profile fills can happen. That would seem to me to be a security risk. The spammers would love that.
Wall.fm is good if you want bland profiles or themes and don't know much about CSS and just accept what you pay for.

Spruz was good for me for a long while - I still have a site there as I haven't moved over fully to buddypress yet with a vampyre site. lol working on it.
But Spruz is slow, affordable but slow, themes are boring even though very customizable, and still a number one, but it's hard to get it seen by people. It's still listed as a game guild site.
Wordpress.com is great without it being very community-ish you have to build your community there takes about three months, and even then it's not like buddypress.
Webs.com great themes, very affordable but some plugin app pages are broken thumbnails. Also offer domain solutions.
SocialGO, 14 day trial now also, just kinda blah.
Grou.ps - I loved grou.ps but when they changed their paying plans I couldn't pay with my credit card any longer and they refused to accept it. ;(
SocialParadox.com - Useable ning 2.0 site with the wire like (pligg or drupal) and useable themes from their library and also skemanon.com
However, adult names in email very unprofessional but affordable with a 10.00 no ad's plan.
