Conversation on Twitter with former Mode Media/CEO, Former CEO of Ning

May 18, 2016

For what it's worth, finally "heard" from someone involved with Ning, the former Ning CEO - - and (just found out today, Former of Mode Media/CEO, as well), Samir Arora. It wasn't much, but great to hear he is listening. Does this mean Ning will improve their communication dialogue with Ning Creators? Who knows? But, maybe, just maybe, they will start listening, or at least tell Ning Creators their plans for the future of this platform. Honestly, this is the first time in 2 years I have heard one word from this company, other than support calls, "...working on the issues, updates to come..." AND the announcement: Notice of 2016 Storage Limit and Pricing Plan Changes. I just wanted to share this with you all. If you want to follow on Twitter, click on one of the links, below.

phpFox - Build Your Own Social Community!

I will continue to  design sites on Ning, help maintain existing sites. BUT, I am about to embrace the new version of phpFox! I love what I'm seeing.

This Blog post started out with sharing a very short Twitter response from the former CEO of Ning and Mode Media. It's turned into an active discussion on Ning alternatives. Join the conversation.

Writer Chick, sorry to hear that. Maybe he'll hear of this post, and act on it. I let you know if I find a hosted solution that I think would work for you.

Good to see you!

Jen

As someone who doesn't know a lot of code and who doesn't have the time to devote to learning it, I'm depressed.  I can't find anywhere else to move to that is as easy to use as Ning was.  *sigh* I have contacted Paul on JR and he was supposed to evaluate my site to see how much it would cost me a month, but have not heard a word from him since.  I just don't have much hope that JR would be a positive experience for me.  :(

Friends of Mountain Dulcimer,

Agree, wish I had said it as well as you did, Corporate design level. That's exactly what I was trying to say, and knew it would come out sideways. =) I have to admit, you and Indie Gospel have made me stop and take notice. My problem is, the time invested in learning new products. This is my livelihood, designing sites. So, I have to be super careful how I move forward - - for lack of a better way of explaining it.

Thanks! Have a great weekend.

Thanks for the excellent info. I'm working on getting the software - - thinking I should wait for 4.4. But yeah, would love to go ahead and start playing, if you're absolutely sure you want to share...

Hi Jen, I sent you the credentials yesterday via private message immediately after my last comment. Enjoy...

Jen, Jamroom has grown and improved by leaps and bounds.  There are a lot of us who have created and now run our own JR sites.  You are able to see that our self-created sites are not of corporate design level.  But why judge the platform based on our non-pro efforts?

Jamroom is really waiting for a professional with real design expertise to come along and create a corporate showcase site or two. It's got all the tools. I'm not sure why folks keep waiting to see someone else's sites ...YOU could design a fantastic professional site on Jamroom in your sleep. I would love to see you give JR a whirl!   :)

Hi Indie Gospel,

We have a forum for former Ningsters over on Jamroom. Some of them used Ning 3 and it is not nearly as powerful for designers as Jamroom is.

I'd love to see the work of these "designers". I did NOT want to admit this. But, you won't stop. ;-) I have searched high and low, and have yet to see a modern looking and highly professionally designed site - - clean and nice like yours and DM, yes. I don't mean this to insult anyone, truly do not mean it that way. But for my preference, and what I know Corporate Clients want, just can't find it. And trust me, I WANT to find it. I think I would have a blast working in and around those guys at Jamroom, seem like genuine guys, genius minds, responsible, accountable for their works, and my kind of people. I am being quite sincere, not words I would use for most.

The same story for PHPFox, we have a bloke who is quite knowledgeable and he prefers Jamroom after spending years building with PHPFox.It all depends by what you mean by "design". Yes, Ning has a fantastic design studio in terms of easy CSS manipulation and drag and drop simplicity for layouts. Any novice can build a "pretty" site, within set limits of functionality. Styling options are super easy and intuitive, I agree.

I was referring to custom design at a professional level, not a novice making it look nice with the built-in themes. That's a great thing, on any platform. But for my needs, that's not a topic of priority. Most of my Clients want me to design their sites, and they never touch the design. But, for the Creator who wants to design their own, tweak often, sounds like Jamroom and Ning are both good solutions. But, we know the story of Ning. I would think at this point, Jamroom is winning for that type of valuable User - - in support, no question. As far as the "bloke" and phpFox, I don't know yet what my final thoughts will be on this platform. I'm simply impressed with what I see thus far, and want to give it a go.

Believe me Ken, I want to WANT Jamroom. I love how they have supported their product. To me, that speaks volumes. But, I've got to see more. I did take strong notice that they have improved their Jamroom.net site design, tremendously.

Best to you,

Jen

Indie you failed to answer my question.  How long have you been with JR and how long until you went 'live'.  I bought the JR code in 2014.  I've built with it three times (the last one being three months ago) and all three to extreme annoyance. We bailed on each one.  If I want to change a color, I want to be able to lay my hands on it now.  Now search and search until I find it.  Nor do I want to feel like I'm going through three years of college in order to learn the curves in site builder. Yes, its powerful but far from what I desire.  By leap years. They'll eventually get there.  I'm just not waiting. Just my .02.  Best of luck to you.
