I did do this first as a blog but then I figured I'd post my successes here. First there is always this site!

A few tips from me-

Try your local craigslist....keep the add simple and on point.

Myspace ads- If you have a myspace site, post your banner on your page and add the classifieds application...post new bulletins each week or daily promoting different areas of your site.

Teachstreet.com- If you teach on your site...this is a great site for posting classes and lessons, even have badges you can put on your site, and you can also link that profile to craigslist.

Google- google has a free add url page to submit your sites...Ive gotten a few hits that way

Word of Mouth- once word gets around about how great your site is...people will come.

Facebook- Start a site fan page. I did that and have a few fans...I mainly use it for updates on the site.

Mainting and running a website is a lot of work..and if you arent going to be commited to it 100% then it will avail you nothing.

Just from the suggestions above...Ive gotten quite a few new members in the past week alone.

(Jen I hope its ok that I post this)

Thanks for the tips Jen...I'm looking for ways to get more shoppers to my site--and will try some of your suggestions--I have been getting alot of traffic from goggle. One of the things I was wondering if there is a way to collaborate with Ning to help with promoting your Ning networks? Do you have any tips on that? Is that even possible?

Have a great day,
Maureen
LOL I'm not Jen! I dont know if you can collaborate with Ning about promoting your networks though. Promotion is up to the site creator. Ning does have a few groups to help support its nc creators.
Hi Maureen,
Yeah, a very good tip, but I didn't add that one. Temple of Our Lady of the Moon did. ;-)

No, not Ning.com. The only thing you can hope for with Ning is for them to feature your site in their blog. I work with them as a volunteer Guide on Creators and promote Ning around the clock. They have never featured this site, although I would adore it, if they would someday. ;-)

I would suggest this: send in a request via the Support Desk that you would love for them to feature your site on their blog. You never know. :-)
Sorry I messed that up...thank you Temple of oUr Lady of the Moon. I'm surprised Jen that they haven't featured you...anyway I'll do what you suggest and see what kind of response I get...they did feature me a while back but the site has grwon so much since then that I thought it would be great to have us featured on their blog again....thanks again Ladies!
I second that motion that Jen's site here should get featured...its all about Ning aint it? ha ha
Hi Temple of Our Lady of the Moon,
Yes, of course! I would love it if you'd post it as a tip! Nice Tips, thank you!

Best,

You got it Jen! Blessed Be.
You mentioned adding your url to google but when I do this, it cannot verify the website..I also tried to use the ccs code they asked to copy and paste into the website and this did not help either..What am I doing wrong?? My site is in the ning directory but is not showing up on Google..Waht is happening??

I have a hit counter and it is continually moving up, but for nothing..

My site is www.kokopellipage.ning.com
If you want to check it..

If I remember correctly that has to do with your robots.txt file. Which when edited will allow search engines to crawl your site. When we first start our networks the file it set to not allow web crawlers. I dont remember how to edit it but your finished txt file should look something like user-agent:* which will allow the search engines to crawl your site and verify your url. Manage-Advanced- Robots.txt once you do that THEN you can go to google webmaster tools and get the code which will be a string of numbers and copy and paste it into the skinny box at the bottom of the webmaster tools bar on your site. Any webcrawler codes go in the Analytics box on your site which can be found manage-analytics. Hope this helps.

Also check out this site for more information. http://www.google.com/webmasters/checklist/
I tried all of that..I see nowhere to put the code in the settings..No skinny box..nothing..I also looked at the CSS code its self and there is no "user-agent" or anything..hmmmm..I must be missing something here..Can you come over and show me..???? LOL

I have alot to learn about this...

Erich
I wish I could! Ok one thing at a time Erich....I'll try to help as best I can...Google Add Url-

Step 1: Add your Ning Network

In a separate browser window, sign into Google Webmaster Tools and click on the button that says "Add a site." In the form, enter the address of your Ning Network:

Step 2: Select a verification method

On the next page, you'll see a dropdown next to "Verification method." Select the "HTML file" option.

Step 3: Copy the name of the file that Google generates.

It will look something like:

google3ea8999e560a6e67.html

On the bottom of that page you will see a box..its long and skinny paste the number google gives you into the box...the reason why it wont verify is because you have to fix the Robots.txt file first! Go go manage-advanced-robots.text....take out whats there and put in user-agent:*

Its not as hard as you think it is!
