Mythbusters: Three Things We Aren’t Doing on May 4

Posted by John McDonald on April 20, 2010 – 3:30 pm

Since announcing that we are now focusing 100 percent of the company on enhancing the features and services we offer to paying Network Creators and plan to phase out our free service, we’ve received a lot of feedback from
Network Creators. We’ve heard from free and paid, business and nonprofit, educators and artists. We’ve been interacting on Creators, reading your comments on the Ning Blog and taking in your tweets. And, we’ve been listening to all of your ideas, suggestions and concerns. We’ll share all of the details of our new offering with you, including features and price points, on May 4. However, I know there’s been some confusion and a number of rumors circulating about what we will announce and then roll-out in early summer. I wanted to take a minute to let you know three of the things we aren’t planning on doing on May 4.

  1. Rumor: “Ning will shut down networks who don’t begin paying for premium services by May 4.” FALSE. You will have at least 10 weeks to evaluate the new pricing structure and make a decision to
move to the new paid service. We’ll be announcing the details of our new pricing structure on May 4. We plan to roll-out the new pricing structure in early summer and then give you a transition period to
    sign-up for the new offering.
  2. Rumor: “Only very large networks will be able to afford the new fees.” FALSE. I am confident that many of you, particularly those of you already paying for premium services, will be pleasantly
surprised by our new pricing structure. Our goal is to set the pricing at a level which will make Ning an attractive solution for both larger and smaller Ning Networks.
  3. Rumor: “This change means teachers and non-profits won’t be able to continue to use Ning.” FALSE. As Jason mentioned in his blog post last week, it’s our goal to have a set of product
and pricing options that will make sense for all Ning Networks — even those that have limited budgets. Specifically, we know how many non-profit organizations and educators use Ning, and we plan on offering an option that will make it possible and attractive for them to stay on
    the Ning Platform.

Hopefully this will ease your concerns (if you have any) and help get you excited about what’s coming up. I’m looking forward to revealing more on May 4 and answering all of your questions then.

Thanks for the update Jen. Sounds good and promising to me. Don't understand the highly negativity. I know the way NING anouced all this was not good at all, but this is another story. The last news should make free members and premium alike looking forward to the 4th. May and personally I am more excited for early summer to come soon... I hope the promised NING 2.0 will not be disapointing like other big anouncments in the past...but I am confident NING has some great stuff in pipline other they would not allowed themself this kind of shocking anouncments...they must know or be confident that NING 2.0 will make it all up again, lol

Have an outstanding day!

Hi Jen
I always haven't answer for my question. I make a lot of work to make discussions for informations historics, politics, etc... I make a lot of this work to inform the members and visitors (I made an open site) and it's for them, not for me.
If i must pay for work and for the website, I prefer to make an other website in an other free plateform. I don't want money for I make, but I don't want to pay for this too.
The 4 mai is too late and I must know now.
Sorry

I think its obvious that ning will be charging more than their current premium services, and maybe this is because they are going bankrupt and don't feel they have any other option... personally, the way they have done this and handled this is wrong... doesnt make me have much trust and faith in them.... so personally I wont be staying with them.. my network is small and while I had plans to do something with it, I can go elsewhere and do that.

They are skirting over all the issues people raise and the questions they ask lmao.... a very simple question is, how much will you be charging.... and they have not had the decency to give a rough range of prices will be begin at *insert amount here* post, message, announcement... and to be fair, I think people have the right to know.

Total bunch of idiots at the minute the NING management!

It still does not answer the biggest fear that ning could be on the verge of bankruptcy. I have mentioned this fear several times could it be that is not a myth?

Thanks Jen, Waiting waiting. I am learning programming and I learned a whold heck of a lot about having my first web page eva and I started on computers when there was DOS soz i guess i should know how already but now i will learn more either way. Praying for a reasonable fee. Tweens and teens hang out at my site instead of on the corner. Maybe i wll qualify for the lower non profit fee. Lots O Love

I have about 9 or so Ning networks... I help many pets get adopted and grieving families, Mac users etc. Luckily for me it will not be too much hassle to re-do much of my work using Elgg. I am now hosting my own Elgg network and though a pain in the butt to set up, what ning has not thought about is that they have now opened the doors for other social sites to make hay while they make a mistake of making some of these changes.

Presently I pay about $100 a month to ning. A joke really... I host my own stuff and am more than willing to pay a nominal fee, but to stop all free services is a huge mistake. I don't think ning really have listened or read many of the personal stories and thank yous for having such free sites available. For many it is the only interaction they have with the outside world. Good in the sense it has pushed me to go it alone and I have learned a lot in the last week or two.

For the entrepreneurs of you out there, get creating Ellg templates, cheap and affordable. DO NOT buy $80 'Juipo Green Pod" template for Elgg as it is a rip off. There are free templates that are much better.

One of the ways I was thinking of enticing my present members over to the new sites is to offer a competition of sorts, but even still to have a bunch of ning sites up and running is going to be a full time job to get them converted over.

I think moving forward we all need to look at options where we host our own sites and do not rely on ning etc. I'm sorry for all of us out there that now have to re-think the game, to re-think a huge portion of our day to day lives.

Good luck everyone! Andrew
