So I am posting this announcement on several high profile websites hoping to accomplish this goal. The site currently ranks for 8 out of the 10 positions on the first page. Since my profile on this sites is ranking high on the second page of the results I thought I would post here to see if the profile will move up any.

Last week my site, http://tucsonseosolutions.com, held 10 out of 10 places on the first page of the Google results. Then when I went to make a video about this accomplishment the site only had 8 positions. To be honest this is not a very competitive search, but I still like the idea of rankings in all 10 spots for this long tail keyword phrase. This doesn't happen often.

I will keep you informed about this adventure. This is just another example of how you can use social media to crush your local competition. I did this with another similar site and that post is already (three hours earlier) and the post is ranking on the first page!

I hope that this post opens your eyes to the huge positives that sites like this can have in the local search marketplace.

Thanks,
Urban
Tucson SEO Solutions
520-505-6024

Local Arizona SEO Solutions
Scratch My Back Marketing Explained – The Reduxtag:jensocial.com,2010-02-28:2154984:BlogPost:2036022010-02-28T13:30:00.000ZUrban - Tucson SEO Solutionshttp://jensocial.com/profile/UrbanTucsonSEOSolutions

I have been discussing what I call Scratch My Back Marketing since the beginning of 2009. I figured that it was finally time to write a specific post on the topic. Scratch My Back Marketing is based on a lifestyle and spiritual principal of giving to get. That’s right as in is better to give than receive. Now, I have nothing against receiving especially if it involves material resources such as capital. However, for our purposes I will settle for great comments left on my blog.

When I reference giving I do so with backlinks building efforts in mind. If you have been around internet marketing for any length of time you will have discovered the importance of links or backlinks. More specifically I am referring to other websites that link to your site. These links are known as backlinks.

These links are the foundation of Google’s algorithm. Applying SEO techniques to a website is good but it needs to be combined with a steady link building effort to be effective. Acquiring these links is becoming a huge challenge for website owners as fewer and fewer blogs and websites are offering Do Follow links for content or comments.

What I am suggesting is taking link building to another level. SMBM takes a multifaceted approach to link building. I consider link building as one leg in a three legged stool. The other two legs of this stool are branding and advertising. Every blog comment should be considered and opportunity for advertising your knowledge or for branding purposes. I have had quality comments left on a blog lead substantial business so I know that it is an effective marketing approach.

Now a days, we must locate Web 2.0 social media sites, blogs, and forums that allow user generated content to build these much needed backlinks. There are other options but they are generally ineffective, obsolete, or black hat. Google also has made it very clear that it does like the practice of buying and selling links (black hat) and it has taken action against sites that are involved in this practice.

So for these websites to be useful in gaining higher search rankings, these sites must provide Do Follow links. These Do Follow links have the ability to pass what is known link juice. It is this juice that will assist your website in gaining and maintaining high search engine rankings.

The idea behind Scratch My Back Marketing is that the website user will exchange useful content and comments for useful Do Follow links. It’s a simple matter of applying the concept of giving to receive. This is the genesis of my approach. This same approach can also be applied to sites that offer No Follow links. However, these No Follow links will not assist you in achieving higher search ranking. But they may be useful in generating website traffic and business.

SMBM allows both the website user (link builder) and the website owner to join together for the higher good of both. It is a classic example of a win/win situation. However, many people don’t buy into this approach. They like to put in as little effort as possible and they want to acquire the maximum benefit. That is why my blog has been requiring a 20 word minimum (150 characters) to acquire a useful anchor text Do Follow backlink for comments. If you want a link from my blog you must earn it.

These short comments will likely get deleted on most blogs worth posting on anyways. So I ask is it better to post 10 short "thank you" comments and maybe get one or two links or post 4 good comment on good blogs and get them all accepted? I always think long term and I am always considering the ROI for my efforts. As for me I will vote for quality comments every time.

Both scenarios will take about the same amount of time. Yes, leaving good comments takes more time as you actually have to read the post but it does pay off with better results for your efforts. This is often knows as your Return On Investment. The investment here is time.

The other option here is to add quality content such as a blog post like this. Many web 2.0 social media sites will allow you to sign your post and include a link or two. The idea here is to provide useful information while not self promoting. A dentist might write about preventative oral care while being careful not to do so be directly self promoting.

The key here is to follow the website policies as closely as possible. These social sites need, want, and desire your content as long as it is useful.

Quality comments also lend a certain amount respect and will assist in building a blogs reputation. These quality comments also provide what is commonly known as the fresh content bump for the blog or website. Google and the other search engines often reward fresh content by moving a blog post or site up in the search rankings based on this new content.

There will likely be an additional benefit if enough people by into the concept of Scratching My Back Marketing. It should encourage more blogger's to become or stay Do Follow. Let’s face it folks someone as got to stand up as a voice of reason here. The ability to acquire useful Do Follow links is getting more difficult everyday.

Update 08/27/2009:

I got tired of asking that commenter's to leave a useful comment of at least 20 words of more on my blog. So I had a plugin created and called it The Scratch My Back Marketing Plugin. It currently requires that a blog commenter leave a minimum comment of 150 characters in length for the comment to be considered for posting on the blog. If the comment is too short it is automatically rejected. It also allows you to adjust the character requirement higher if you wish. Here is the link where you can download the free Scratch My Back Marketing Plugin. It works on WordPress blogs.

Update 02/20/2010: I did a case study on the effectiveness of the Scratch My Back Marketing program. I ran it the entire year of 2009. My website started out the beginning of 2009 ranking for 20 keyword phrases related to my business in the Google search results. At the end of the year that number had grown to exceed 80 keyword phrases.

Not only did my website benefit in the Google search results but it also produced the biggest contract for the year 2009. I had left a useful comment on someone blog. A reader liked my reply and followed the comment link back to my website. They liked what they saw and made any inquiry that later developed into business.

In closing I would like to ask you this: Have you ever visited someone’s website that left a comment that read "nice post?" Have you ever done business with someone that left a "nice post" comment? The answer to both of these is likely no!

Thanks,
Pizza and Beers SEO – 700 Keyword Phrases

When anyone is considering a website or a website marketing program good research is essential. The basic idea is to explore how people express her thoughts while using a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, or perhaps Bing. The problem is this; Market research can become expensive very quickly especially if you hire a research firm.

When anyone is considering a website or a website marketing program good research is essential. The basic idea is to explore how people express her thoughts while using a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, or perhaps Bing. The problem is this; Market research can become expensive very quickly especially if you hire a research firm.

The fact is that most small business lacks both the financial infrastructure and the savvy to know how to effectively buy such services. That still doesn’t diminish the need to get into the mind of internet searchers who might need, want, or desire your products. If your company only has one product or service you might have an easier task or not.

Even if you only sell one item it still might be difficult to target your buyer’s primary motivator. Let’s say that your business cleans carpets and that’s all that you provide. And your businesses market is provided in Tucson. The logical keyword phrase for you would be Carpet Cleaning Tucson. But the general searching public might also be searching for any of the following.

Dry Carpet Cleaning Tucson

Extraction Carpet Cleaning Tucson

Steam Cleaning Carpets Tucson

Natural Carpet Cleaning Tucson

Green Carpet Cleaning Tucson

Shampoo Carpet Cleaning Tucson … Just to name a few possibilities…

Unfortunately, most small to medium sized business try to make an educated guess about the searchers are thinking as it relates to their business. They need to know what are on the searchers minds when they are seeking your products. Yet, they often fail in their assumptions by falling back into the use of industry jargon. This creates a problem because the general public likely is not aware of these industry specific terms. Your website designer will likely but of little or no help here.

I ran into this problem myself when I launched my local SEO services website. The original primary focus was on Organic SEO in Tucson. I got this idea by using a keyword discovery tool. However, my target market, small local businesses, likely had never heard of SEO. For those who had, very few of them would have ever expressed their searches as Organic SEO in Tucson.

After three months, I eventually realized that only SEO professionals used the term Organic SEO. This created a situation where the website has ranking well, as in # 1, for a market that didn’t need my service. Ouch!

I had to re-evaluate my marketing focus and do it quickly or I likely would become another failed business statistic. Often doing this type of research requires the use of focus groups and that can get expensive very quickly. As I ponder what to do next I had a eureka moment. This could get real complex very quickly.

I had to find a way to efficiently conquer this marketing dilemma. There are a myriad of factors that can or could affect how someone thinks as they search the internet.

Is there searcher impaired in any way?

Are they on medication?

Are they buzzed from any source legal or otherwise?

Are they in pain?

Are they tired?

Are they hungry?

Are they stressed?

Even the time of day or financial pressures will have an impact on the searchers thoughts patterns. Thus physical, psychological, spiritual, and environmental conditions may all play roles here. These variables are not easily measured.

So you must be asking yourself, this doesn’t sound easy or like anything on the cheap. Well, what I am suggesting with Pizza and Beers SEO might not be able to control all of these factors. But it offers an easy to implement and cost effective alternative.

Here is what is required for this to work for your business to implement this project. You will need a meeting place that serves Pizza and Beers and that has a room that can accommodate around 30 people. You will likely require an assistant or two. The project will also require some survey forms, writing implements, and of course your focus group of hungry and thirsty volunteers.

Now, here is the original post which I wrote in early 2008.

Pizza and Beers SEO

Yep, one of my standard recommendations for new clients is that they practice Pizza and Beer SEO. This is how it works. When you’re building a new websites keyword list you should start by gathering a diverse group of friends, family, and business associates for pizza and beer at a local hot spot or pub. A group of twenty or so should work out nicely.

Once you have the group together ask them all to make a list of words that they might enter as a search query to find your businesses products or services on the web. Then sit back and enjoy your time together over pizza but hold of on the beer for now! Then after and hour or so of socializing repeat this process and again record the results.

Now you may allow your party to get started with the consumption of beer for the following hour. Now repeat the same process of asking what keywords that they would use all over. Then record these results as well.

Now, your website keyword research kicks into high gear. You will need create a database and record all of the information that you have gathered. You can now begin comb through your data to see what the common trends there might be and to glean the gems that you might have easily overlooked.

The food and alcohol will affect each person differently and these changes will be observable in a different set of keywords that are developed throughout the process. Another factor that comes into play is simply the passage of time. The longer that each person has to think about it the more likely that they will choose words that they hadn’t the first time around.

It’s actually like having three different focus groups for market research for the price of one! Not only is Pizza and Beer SEO an effective keyword development strategy, you also save the cost of surveying three separate groups. It also will cut your projects time significantly.

You have no way of knowing what peoples state of mind this when they are searching. If you searchers are hungry or well feed these will effect how they think. If someone is highly stressed or under the influence these factors will play a major role in determining what searches that they will use to find anything on the internet.

You see, all successful websites are a collaborative effort between designers, the marketing team, and the client. The client does their keyword research and I do mine. Then, together we combine this palette of words to paint a well defined and highly targeted website for both the search engine and the searchers.

You could use some keyword tool for your research. But then you would get the same results as you competitors doing the same searches that you are. It’s extremely difficult to gain any advantage using these tools. Another short coming of these tools is they always miss regional variations in language.

This could provide you a huge advantage. A person in Chicago wanting burgers might easily search for “sliders.” But that term is so regional that it likely would never appear in these keyword tool databases. But if you’re cooking and serving burgers in or around the Windy City you will want to consider sliders as a reasonable choice for a keyword to target. And an even better choice would “Chicago sliders.”

Pizza and Beers SEO is just another example of some of the free or inexpensive small business internet solutions that have appeared on the Phoenix Niche SEO – Internet Marketing Services Blog. These solutions are being presented to assist your business in finding resources that are either free or affordable and that are effective.

Pizza and Beers SEO can also be useful for existing websites as well. If you are struggling to find your target markets then you might want to try this concept.

Update: 11/14/2008 I, recently, presented a seminar on keyword development here in Tucson.

There I included a presentation on Pizza and Beer SEO for the first time publicly. Both Pizza and Beers SEO and presentation were very well received. That was then, but this method has worked very, very well again and again. But even after posting this update on my blog I still get people responding like this “why not just use Google’s keyword tool.” And you can as I mentioned in this article if you don’t mind getting the same information that everyone else is getting for that same keyword phrase.

Pizza and Beers is about finding those niches that may not show up using these tools. The brilliance of this method is especially relevant when your business is local, as you will be able to establish the regional lexicon in your geographic area. Imagine this, you have a restaurant and you want to optimize what web page for dinner specials. That might be a bad choice if the locals call this meal supper!

Update 02/17/210 I was checking my websites analytics and discovered that 700 keyword phrases we used to find the site over the last 30 days! So it is looks like there are lots of possibilities that can easily be overlooked.

Thanks,

We all get hit up by over aggressive marketers on social sites. You know, those who welcome you to a site and then start selling you something. We also get friends requests from people who have never contacted us before. With this in mind I did a little research on effective social media marketing methods.

In the dozens of article I reviewed no one suggested that in your face marketing works. Nor did anyone suggest that your first contact be a friend’s request. So I thought I would share some of the wisdom of others on social media marketing.
A few days back, I received an interesting email from Start Up Nation. This site is an absolutely tremendous source of information for the beginning entrepreneur.

I discovered this site several months back while doing some research. I liked the site enough that I became a member. The site has become a friend of sorts. I have visited often over the last four months. The site is definitely jammed with great information.

They send me periodic updates. When I saw their email in my inbox I quickly opened the mail. It was announcing their Start-up Nations Home Based 100 Competition. It is a competition to be named the best business in a group that included 10 different categories. These are as follows:

• Best Financial Performers
• Most Innovative
• Boomers Back in Business
• Greenest
• Yummiest
• Wackiest
• Savviest in Social Media
• Recession Busters
• Most Slacker Friendly
• Most Glamorous

The contest is very simple and straight forward you simple are asked to provide an explanation about why you should win. It really is that simple. People are given the opportunity to vote on your submission. After you vote you will see a pop up box. It asks if you want to receive daily email notices to vote again.

The most intriguing aspect of the contest is that there is no prize. My business/life partner thought that I had gone crazy by entering a contest with no prize. Start Up Nation explains their no prize policy this way “First off, the publicity is priceless.” It went much further than that but the whole idea is publicity, for both you and the site.
This site is all about start-up businesses. These businesses are likely to be extremely short on cash and struggling to get visibility and attention for their business.. I think that this is a great marketing opportunity for both the site and for those who participate.

You are required to enter two business categories. I entered the Recession Busters and Boomers Back In These business categories seemed to be the best match for Tucson SEO Solutions. Is a competition like this for you?… Maybe, and maybe not. I believe that the site is worth a visit and I recommend that you visit it now. I would also ask that you visit our profile page it will give you an idea about how to frame your content.. Then I would suggest that you compare our entry to other contestant’s pages. It should provide you an example of what to do and not to do if you decide to enter the contest yourself.
Getting The Cart Before the Ox – Or How To Do Social Media Wrong!tag:jensocial.com,2009-05-30:2154984:BlogPost:1214582009-05-30T03:00:00.000ZUrban - Tucson SEO Solutionshttp://jensocial.com/profile/UrbanTucsonSEOSolutions

I have recently launched a social networking site in Tucson that is geared towards both profit and non profit businesses. I have also joined a slew of social media sites this year as part of The 109 Day Link Building Explosion Program. The program is based on what I call “scratch my back marketing. The whole idea is to make networking and branding the cornerstones of any social media effort.

If you are looking for backlinks then your responsibility is to add value through great content or comments. I encourage you to take a long term view of your marketing efforts. When you add value (back scratching) to a site you are rewarded with useful links and recognition (networking – branding) more back scratching.

When you are using social media sites like Ning or Facebook the same principals apply. You visit someone’s profile and then their website. You then will want to make an inquiry about the individual or business on their wall. Your job is to show friendship and kindness. When you do this people are likely to respond positively to you effort. The responder is likely to visit your profile and is likely to answer your inquiry and maybe ask about you.

If there is a common bond you may then ask to become friends because you are establishing a relationship. Social media isn’t much different than attending a business mixer. Successful networkers know their job is to ask about the other person and to be genuinely sincere. How can you expect to effectively market your product or services if you don’t know anything about that person?

When you pitch someone right out the gate you are sending a strong message. That message reads the only thing that I care about is your money and I want some of it. When you go to someone’s profile and ask to be friends without ever establishing a relationship it is often a foolish waste of time. What you are saying is “I want the right to market to you.” That’s not a very good approach.

Imagine for a moment that you are at a business mixer. Then out of nowhere someone sticks a business card or a flier in your face and starts selling you. Would you want to do business with this person? After all, they are selling you without ever having established whether you actually need what they have to offer. The odds don’t favor a business relationship being built under these circumstances.

The person on a social site that starts a contact by selling without building a relationship is practicing cold calling. And as we all know, cold calling is never a very effective marketing approach. You are getting your cart ahead of your ox. This is sad because it is so easy to visit a profile and to establish the potential need, want, or desire. Those who believe every network member is a potential client are only fooling themselves.

People pitch me marketing products all day long. They fail to realize that I am a marketing professional and I am not likely to be interested in their products. However, if you invite me to visit your page and I see something that is unique I might become a customer or I might write a review about the product on my blog.

Yes, what I am recommending here, scratch my back marketing, is a time consuming process. I like to compare it to nurturing a garden. You don’t go out one day and throw some seed about and realistically expect results the next day. Gardening, successful gardening takes time, effort, and patience. Social media marketing can easily be compared to gardening it takes time, effort, and patience. People like to do business with people that they know and trust!
Just about anyway that you would search for Do Follow blogs and lists you'll find my website. It is usually in the top 3 and it has been there a long time. But Comment spam destroyed these lists. I would like to invite you to read The Demise of the Do Follow Lists.
