Hi Jens, this is just a Google search that searches specifically for the search words plus the word Ning. It may not find your site, but like you said, just mentions. All in all though, it works pretty well.
Hope that helps explain it,
Jen
Hi Jen, nice idea - now I understand why it shows the overtones.ning.com URL of my network and not the URL which is in use. And it shows all Ning sites which are currently unavailable. By the way - this is a nice tip - we can add some additional text to our networks which are available :) - maye a sentence like ... because you have forgotten to donate for the maintenance of .... - but follow this link .... - Best, Jens
LOL, good idea - - yeah, I've got to clean house on JenSocial and will probably hire someone to do it. There's no telling how many of the listed Ning Networks are defunct.
Have a great week,
Jen
Yes, I will do it. Maybe in June 2011 I will take a break then it will be useful that visitors can read this on this currently unavailable text. --- cleaning the house - that is a good impressions. I don't know what I shall do with about 300 or 400 inactive member profiles on my network. To call this cleaning the house sounds good! Thank you for this expression.
Groups? This is not towards you, =) but the topic in general. It always throws me back when someone refers to a Ning Network/Social Community as a Group. This is what the cross breeding did for the brand - - made our networks just another Group. Thank goodness Ning finally "got it" and went back to white label centric with the ability to build independent Social Networks (what I bought into from the beginning). If the cross breeding had existed in the beginning, I would have never considered this a serious platform.
So with the moving away from the cross breeding nightmare, to my knowledge there is no way to find old friends without first accessing those old networks. If you don't know how to access them, then you probably can't do it.
Oh I completely agree! Ning does not have the right to revive anything. And, I do not think they would ever try to do this. And I do not think Ning would be interested in "taking on" reviving or selling any network.

Honestly, not sure what Ning will do. I imagine over time they will simply delete them. I don't remember any discussion about it.

I haven't had time to delete all the inactive listings, so sorry. It is on my priority list which is kind of long.
