I am a brand new NC and I am faced with selecting the right social network for my community. I have started a trial with Grou.ps and the out-of-the-box template seems to be set up PERFECT for our needs. Our community is geared toward youth group members that are heavy Facebook users and the Grou.ps template looks and feels a lot like Facebook. They could jump in and participate immediately in that environment.

I sense that Ning may be more robust and it definitely has a fabulous support network. At the same time, I feel like Ning would require a learning curve on the part of me any my users that would not be necessary if Grou.ps is sufficient.

Can anyone speak objectively to the differences between these two solutions to help me be at peace with my choice to go with Grou.ps or persuade me to switch to Ning?? Our membership will ramp up rapidly and I won't be in an easy position to switch.

You can switch backgrounds, headers, or anything that uses url() statement in css. The key once again is not to cause your network to slow down. Two years ago when this project was first started we tangled with the site lag or sluggish performance. To overcome this issue it was a known fact that we needed to find a way to address the change with a common location.

For this example we address the background image of the body but you are not committed to that you can change anything you like that has a url tag. You can host it on your website or my host. I can do everything for you , you just post the images to me. I can also switch them automatically.

Here are the instruction for creating switching body background images.

Instead it operates a single file that is copied to when the day changes. Host controls the background via a single file named “master.jpg”

background-image: url(http://yourhostsite/yourhostdirectory/master.jpg)

Step one copy all the image files http://yourhostsite/yourhostdirectory/

7 for once a day or

14 for twice a day

Edit either the onceaday.txt or the twiceaday.txt to reflected Only edit cssdata between quotes that says http://yourhostsite/yourhostdirectory/yoursundayimage1.jpg and so on.

Then save it as “index.php” or the same name it had (onceaday, or twiceaday).php

Then copy the this file to the host http://yourhostsite/yourhostdirectory/

Run the php file once so it will create the “master.jpg” : on your host click the magnifying glass that will execute the file.

Edit you css and change the background, using the file location "master.jpg" whatever you wish to change every day or twice a day I just picked the background because that is what most people want to change. Many wish to change the header or some section that they are promoting.

“background-image: url(http://yourhostsite/yourhostdirectory/master.jpg);”

next go to http://www.setcronjob.com/cp and schedule a task twice a day or once a day to call the file http://yourhostsite/yourhostdirectory/index.php

Have you purchased and used Microsoft Word for years, just to find that you've lost your original software after a hard disk crash? No fun. Been there. Done that. I think I've paid for MS Word and/or MS Office a-half-a-dozen times over the years, very expensive.

Did you know you can drag/drop Microsoft Word (MS Word) Documents to a Google Docs browser page, and the document will be imported automatically for your editing and use? It works like magic - - most of the time. =) I'm sure this is true of other file types as well. This is the only one I have tested.

Instructions How To Import Microsoft Word Document into Google Docs:

Open your File Explorer, where you can find the MS Word File.

Open your browser to http://docs.google.com/

If you haven't created an account, do. It's a great document sharing service. You will need a gmail account. Go here to get started: http://docs.google.com

After you go to Google Docs, make sure you sign-in.

Re-size the Windows Explorer or Mac Explorer Screen - - where you see all of your files. Make the window about half of your screen width.

Do the same for your Browser Screen where you have Google Docs open.

Find your MS Word Document File in your File Explorer.

Drag/Drop to your Google Docs Browser Window, and Google Docs will help you from there.

BTW, the real beauty of Google Docs is not necessarily saving you from not having MS Word; but the fact that you can share your documents for "shared viewing" and "shared editing". It's a great tool for Team editing.

WARNINGS ON DRAG/DROP TECHNIQUE:

If you do not drag/drop into the area for the document list on Google Docs, it will not work.

Sometimes if you don't hold your mouth just right, again, it won't work. =)

I have found that I have much better success using FireFox as my Browser.

It's worth the trouble though, very nice when it's a success. And it could be that I'm missing a step to make it work better. I looked for an Import command from Google Docs and didn't find it. It could be I missed it.

If you do not see the following screen, it's not working:

Done!

If a screencast is needed, I'll try to do this in the future.

Here are the steps.

1. At the bottom of the groups or members page click to open your rss feed, depending on your browser it will open a feed reader or just the code, but it doesn't matter you just need the URL from the address bar. Copy it.

2. Go to RSSinclude.com You will see a start button, click it.

3. They have free and premium options. The free options are pretty good and the logo they put on it is fairly small in most of the options. Of the two images above members is premium and groups is free. (Groups won't show images in either scenario, they are not part of the RSS feed) I chose to do the 7 day premium trial and will probably purchase it, its pretty cheap at around $35 a year.

4. Set up your feed. Select your style than paste your RSS URL in the box. You will get a preview. The great thing I found about this service is the customizing, no other free surface I found seemed to have near the features, so easy to use.

5. On the tabs in the setup box, Overview is the name of your feed for your use only, name it and create a login and you can come back and edit it later. (make sure you hit save on this page).

6. Content and Styling - play with the colors, padding, fonts and settings until you get it how you want it, you can hit preview and save as many times you need.

(Tip: On some of the styles you couldn't turn off the title bar, so make the bar and the font the same color as the background and reduce the title bar height)

7. Include! This creates your javascript. You can now paste this anywhere you want it! In the examples from my site, I added the top title and the See all... in the text box.

Enjoy and share your ideas please! I have a couple more thoughts on how I can use this :).

I have a site for women motorcycle riders. So I put in the site name, and "women motorcyclists" and similiar. It emails me instantly, daily or weekly when these keywords are mentioned. Then I go to that site, and I post a response. I have gained a few new members AND put more links to my site on the big www!

Another great benefit is that it is giving me some great topics for posting relevant content on my own site.

In social networks, you always need short, uniform and easy remembering URL addresses for your profiles in these social networks. For examples

my twitter is http://twitter.com/class2u

my Facebook http://facebook.com/class2u

my Facebook Page …

In social networks, you always need short, uniform and easy remembering URL addresses for your profiles in these social networks. For examples

my twitter is http://twitter.com/class2u

my Facebook http://facebook.com/class2u

my Facebook Page http://facebook.com/class2u.fans

my Plurk http://plurk.com/class2u

my iYouMe http://www.iyoume.net/profile/class2u

This is the easiest way for you and your friends to remember and find you quickly in the internet.

Google+ is a very new free social service provided by Google. Once you get it in, sure you need a short & easy remembering URL address for your Google+ profile. Then you can easily tell your friends and the world how to connect with you in Google+.

For example, this is my Google+ profile originally:

https://plus.google.com/106418337926803548982/

And this is the Google+ profile url I tell friends:

http://gplus.to/class2u

For now, Google+ don't have customize url address officially. But there is a trusty alternative. Just follow these 1234 steps:

0. Go to http://gplus.to

1. Enter your customize nick name on the left.

2. Go to your Google+ profile page, click on your profile photo. Get the ID numbers from the url as show in the image. Then enter it to http://gplus.to on the right side.

3. Click add button.

4. You get your new short & easy remembering URL address for your Google+
