Social Web Directory :: Social Network Directory :: Ning Tips and Ning Support
I've tried, oh lord I've tried.
I've tried to make Ning realize their Leaderboards are appearing to not work. A lot of people tried to make them realize it also.
I'll add a piece of content and it will not show up in the leaderboards even though it is set to perhaps 10 max items and only 3 are currently showing. It has to do with some nifty coding that Ning feels is pretty smart that avoids people voting up their own content.
What the solution is lacking of course is:
IF Leaderboard is not filled up, THEN ignore previous rules.
A filled leaderboard is better than a halft empty one right? Of course it is, well you try explaining this to Ning (but you're gonna need some nerve medication to get through those "everything looks great" replies from Ning support).
Now the Hot News comes along and it is one of Nings better ideas in a long time. In fact I love it! And we can style it with CSS and translate it into something that works on our networks.
But again they make the same mistake. Which of course is logical if you still haven't realized the first time you already made it.
The Hot News apparently only shows content within the last 24 hours (or something close to it). It's for "busy networks" remember? But does it make any sense to leave the Hot News empty if your network has NOT been busy the last 24 hours, or rather if the members qualified to appear in the Hot News have not been busy for the last 24 hours.
Why not add the same as before:
IF Hot News is not filled up THEN ignore previous rules. A filled up Hot News is better than an empty one right? Well again, we're gonna need that nerve medication.
I'm sorry, I really am. I wish I could write a post like this with a lot less irony and bitterness, but Ning H.Q. is 100% resistant to logic.
So, enjoy ...

Permalink Reply by Writer Chick on November 15, 2011 at 4:00pm I disabled the "Top News" thing. It doesn't work for me. My network isn't busy enough and on weekends, the thing is EMPTY! Yeah, that's what i want my members to do...click on something and there's nothing there! *rolling eyes*
I just don't get how this is a great idea...
Permalink Reply by JenSocial on November 15, 2011 at 4:04pm On top of everything you've stated - - the Leaderboards are not only inaccurate, but easy to manipulate. :( I've seen discussions on Creators that were added, and 10 minutes later with no replies contain 400 views and on the Leaderboard list. Hello?
Permalink Reply by Brian Fløe on November 15, 2011 at 4:13pm could that be someone sharing the discussion with friends and then 400 poppin' by? hmmm, sounds extreme.
But at least they should have realized that what ever rules they might put in place to avoid manipulation, an empty leaderboard is just pointless. Instead they pretend it's a fantastic concept when point to this fact. EVERYBODY agrees, except Ning.
Permalink Reply by JenSocial on November 15, 2011 at 4:46pm Good point. Could be sharing with friends...
Permalink Reply by Brian Fløe on November 15, 2011 at 4:06pm It's a great idea, poorly executed without a deeper understanding of what happens on Ning networks.
Permalink Reply by JenSocial on November 15, 2011 at 4:12pm I try to give them the benefit of the doubt, since I've met a lot of them in person. If it helps at all, they really are an impressive group of brains, up close and personal. I feel sure it'll get better and better as time goes by. I hope so. ;-)
Permalink Reply by Brian Fløe on November 15, 2011 at 4:53pm From insisting the "feature" button / status indicator be hidden in a drop down menu, to Leaderboards half empty with NCs and members adding new content, to removing privacy settings on photos being uploaded, and the list goes on, I see very little evidence of this.
And can anyone tell me which of these is where you choose who can moderate your network?:
Members > moderation
Members > management
You can't, cause the language is confusing. It's Members > management. So obviously it should be like this:
Members > moderation -- should be: Members > management
Members > management -- should be: Members > moderators (moderaTORS)
Just one of the small things I repeatedly tried to call to their attention on creators. They could change it in about 15 minutes and everyone would immediately understand that menu. Instead they ignored my thread.
I wouldn't call it clever. :)
Everyone have a nice evening! And thanks Jen!
Permalink Reply by Brian Fløe on November 16, 2011 at 3:14pm So I keep going to the Hot News section of my latest activity module, what a great idea it is (!), only to find it empty. So why don't they let the last X number of activities stay in the Hot News? Why insist it is better to clear it and leave it empty.
I have no strenght to begin communicating with Ning support on this. All I got back the multiple times I tried was:"it looks great from here!" "it looks like it's working like it's supposed to" "everything looks fine" "we don't see a problem on our end".
They simply don't get it.
